Atascocita High School was named the winner of the fourth annual Sterling Bank Sportsmanship Award Wednesday afternoon at a luncheon at the J.W. Marriott in Houston.

The award is presented by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the luncheon is put on by the Touchdown Club of Houston.

Lamar, Memorial, Fort Bend Bush, Cy-Fair, Dulles, Elsik, Humble, Katy Taylor, Madison, Northbrook, Pearland, Sam Rayburn, and Waltrip were the other schools that were finalists for the award.

Lamar head football coach Tom Nolen was on hand to receive a plaque for being nominated for the Redskins.

Memorial head football coach Gary Koch and senior quarterback Davis Miller were also there to represent the Mustangs.

Atascocita assistant football coach Bill Wilson, who was there in place of Dean Colbert, accepted the award for the Eagles along with defensive lineman Cody Nicholson.

The award is based on all the team’s sportsmanship on and off the field during the games they play and the judges are the referees who work the area high school games.

The criteria for the award is based on the conduct of the team and the coaches, the conduct of the support groups at the contest, and respect for the American flag.

Referees mailed rating cards after each contest to an accountant, who tallied the scores and presented them to a subcommittee. The subcommittee ranked the teams and then selected the winner.

“Believe me, we judged the teams as harshly as they judged us,” said Houston-area referee Ed Thompson, introducing several other area referees who were part of the judging process. “But it’s something that’s necessary to determine such a great award like this.”

Klein in 2006, Scarborough in 2007, and Deer Park in 2008 were the schools to previously win the award.
