‘Damn Yankees’ opens at PHS

From left, Washington Senators manager Van Buren (Pearland High School student John Obenhaus) and reporter Gloria Thorpe (Erika Perry) revel in the team’s newfound success, thanks to miracle slugger Joe Hardy (Adrian Joseph). But the devil, a.k.a. Mr. Applegate (Craig Scott), and his sultry assistant, Lola (Stephany Blomstrom), know the real scoop: Hardy, really a middle-aged Senators fan transformed into a younger man, has sold his soul for the chance to become the greatest baseball player in history. “Damn Yankees” opens Jan. 16 at PHS.

Step up to the plate for Pearland High School’s performance of “Damn Yankees,” the Broadway musical about American baseball.

The show will run Jan. 16-17 and 22-24 at 7:30 p.m. and Jan. 18 at 2:30 p.m. in the PHS south campus auditorium.

“Damn Yankees,” a musical comedy based on Douglass Wallop’s novel “The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant,” frames the Faust legend in 1950s Washington, D.C., when the New York Yankees dominated major league baseball. Music and lyrics are by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross.

Joe Boyd, a middle-aged Washington Senators baseball fan, makes a bargain with Mr. Applegate, the devil disguised as a slick salesman. In exchange for his soul, Joe becomes the Washington Senators’ ticket to success -- a young powerhouse slugger named Joe Hardy. The deal includes an escape clause, but as Joe and the Senators climb to success, Mr. Applegate schemes to wreck Joe’s every chance to dodge damnation.

Premium seating is $12. Tickets for adults are $10, students $7 and staff and senior citizens $8. For reservations, call 281-412-1630 or e-mail breadyd@pearlandisd.org.
