Heading into last Tuesday’s game at Galena Park North Shore, Atascocita’s boys basketball coach John Castles said his team was about to find out where they measured against the area hoops elite.
Following a 45-40 win in the Mustangs’ gym, the Eagles have made it clear that they will be a tough out this season.
Atascocita followed up its impressive win at North Shore with a three-point victory at Eisenhower, bringing its winning streak to three games.
And after playing two of its last three games out of district, the Eagles will head full tilt into district play this Friday with a home date against a dangerous Kingwood team. As of Jan. 5, the Mustangs have lost just twice all season. They will be coming off of what figured to be a tough game against Humble.
Following that game, Atascocita will take on MacArthur on Tuesday to round out a brief two-game home stand. The Generals are having a tough go of things this season, losing five straight games as of Jan. 10.
If the Eagles are to carry on the momentum of their recent winning streak, they will have to rely on their newfound depth. Aside from point guard Jamaal Branch and center Everette Pleasant, the Eagles received scoring boosts from Leroy Taylor and Andrew Romo last week.
Romo led Atascocita with 13 points in its win over North Shore, marking the first time in eight games that anyone other than Branch or Pleasant led the team in scoring. Pleasant contributed 11 points of his own.
Against Eisenhower, Taylor scored 23 points to lead the way for the Eagles. Branch and Pleasant had 13 points while Romo had 11.
Developing extra scoring options will be crucial to Atascocita moving forward. If Taylor and Romo continue to step up, then opposing defenses will have to shift their attention away from Branch and Pleasant, which will make the Eagles a tougher team to defend.
