Tax offices extend hours for deadline

Updated: 01.12.09
Following the tradition of the last four years, the Galveston and League City Branches of the Galveston County Tax Office will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday, Feb. 2 – the last day to pay the tax lady without accruing penalty and interest on 2008 taxes. The Santa Fe and Texas City Branches will be open regular hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“I strongly encourage everyone to check their windshields. If you are one of the more than 27,000 car owners whose sticker expires in January, please do not wait until the end of the month,” stated County Tax Assessor Collector Cheryl E. Johnson. “We have more than 152,000 property owners and approximately 30% will pay in person. It is not unusual for us to have 5,000-6,000 property tax customers each day the last week of January joining the 27,000 renewal customers.”

Other options of insuring timely payment of property taxes are to pay on-line via electronic check ($1 fee) or credit card (2.5% fee). Placing your payment in the Tax Office drop box located at each office is also a good option as is dropping it in the mail. “As long as your payment is postmarked February 2nd, it is considered a timely payment. For slightly more than $1 you may obtain a postmark validation at your local post office. This is far more cost effective than mailing certified and provides generally the same level of proof for tax purposes.”

The Galveston County Tax Office is now accepting over-the-counter credit and debit cards thanks to a recent partnership with JP Morgan Chase. Those not comfortable utilizing our on-line credit card payment capability should call Pay Connexion at 1-866-865-1433 (English) or 1-866-865-1435 (Spanish).

The best option? Go on-line and avoid the line at www.co.galveston.tx.us and click on the Tax Assessor Collector link. Unexpired registration stickers can be renewed and property taxes can be paid without leaving the comfort of home.
