Governor’s Cup highlights weekend tourneys
By Howard Roden
Weather conditions at the 2008 Governor’s Cup in Georgetown were so harsh – rain followed by icy conditions – that the final day of the event was canceled.
Forecasts north of Austin don’t call for a repeat this week – the temperature should reach 60 degrees by Saturday afternoon – but The Woodlands coach Hans Kleinschmidt said playing during the winter comes with the territory for high school soccer teams.
“It was brutal last year,” he said. “But we all have to play and practice in tough conditions. It’s something we have to deal with.”
Players counter the chilly conditions with the latest advances in sports clothing, Kleinschmidt said.
“Once you protect the feet, mid-torso, head and hands, they’ll be fine,” he said. “Then it becomes a case of mind over matter. The kids know how to adapt.”
The Woodlands, fresh off its four-match run through the Kilt Cup, and Montgomery, coming off a runner-up finish at its own invitational, join 3-0 Conroe High for the ninth edition of the Governor’s Cup that begins today.
Magnolia High, New Caney and Willis boys are part of the 4A bracket at the Diadora Cup in Brenham that begins today.
Meanwhile, College Park unveils its inaugural Showcase today. The three-day event features state-ranked Klein (No. 5), Kingwood (No. 9) and Houston Reagan in a round-robin format.
The Cavs (2-1-1) take on Kingwood at 7 tonight.
“I’m proud of the teams we were able to bring in for the first one,” Cavaliers coach John Owens said. “Hopefully, we can make this grow.”
The Woodlands’ top-ranked girls team (3-0-1) faces Spring Branch Memorial at 6 tonight in Katy I-10 Shootout. The Lady Highlanders’ eight-team bracket includes four state-ranked teams – McKinney Boyd (No. 5), Cinco Ranch (No. 6), Klein (No. 9) and Cy Woods (No. 10).
If TWHS gets past Memorial, it plays the winner of Cy Woods-Cy Creek at 6 p.m. Friday.
Montgomery’s Lady Bears venture to the Dallas area for the Duncanville Kick-Off Classice. They open against Longview at 8 tonight.
