Game’s afoot as soccer begins

The other kind of ‘futbol’ entered the field of play last week, just in time for the cold weather.

High school soccer is here and the eight CCISD high school teams saw action in several tournaments.

Clear Lake’s boys and girls squads were on the fields in The Woodlands. The Lady Falcons played in the Lady Highlander Invitational, as did Clear Brook’s girls, while the boys saw action in the KILT Cup.

Clear Creek’s boys were in the Friendswood tournament while the Lady Wildcats, along with the Clear Springs Lady Chargers, played in the Brazoswood tourney.

All in all, the teams played in a couple of dozen matches, almost too many to track.

And there are some more tournaments in the offing before District 24-5A play grabs the attention on Jan. 27.

In the KILT Cup Clear Lake’s boys came so close to going 2-0 in their first two games, but wound up 0-2.

The Falcons tied 2-2 with College Park in their first game, scoring a goal only 90 seconds into the match. The Falcons led 2-1 with five minutes left but College Park scored to tie the game and then won it in the shootout. Dylan Dement and Freddy Lafuente scored the Falcon goals. Assists went to Dylan Schauder and Dement.

Lake then lost to Bolton 2-1, with Alec Valdez scoring the lone Falcon goal on an assist from Matt Kearns. Clear Lake dominated the match but could not finish its opportunities. The Falcons outshot Belton 20-8, including 8-4 ratio on goal. Bolton scored in stoppage time to win the match.

“Two games in a row we couldn’t close out the game to get the result we wanted,” Clear Lake coach Jered Shriver lamented. “It was very disappointing to my guys.”

But Lake did finish much better in defeating North Shore 3-1, despite only a 10-8 and 6-5 on goal shot ratio. Dement scored twice while Taylor Kerrigan tallied once. Assists went to Kerrigan and Stephen Hardy. Shriver felt that the Mustangs were actually the best opponent of the three they faced.

After a 1-1 half, the Falcons scored twice in the final 10 minutes for the win.

“Overall, I was pleased with our development so far,” Shriver said of his team’s play in the KILT Cup.

“This early in the season it is very hard to predict how the team will step on the field and perform. But after our first contest against College Park, I knew that we would play strongly.

“We walked away from the tourney having been disappointed with the results but pleased with the steps we had taken as a team.”

Clear Creek’s boys won their first two games in the Friendswood tourney, downing Dawson and Angleton. But then the Wildcats fell to Houston Sterling 2-1. Andre Wade scored the Cats only goal against Sterling on Saturday.

Creek coach Chris Cobb felt the tourney helped the Wildcats toward the main objective – the upcoming 24-5A season.

“We got some needed experience in the tournament and learned that it takes 80 minutes of solid play in each game to be successful,” Cobb pointed out.

The Lady Wolverines fell to Cinco Ranch 3-0, but rebounded in a big way with a 5-0 win over Lamar. Sophomore midfielder Beth Stratton got the hat trick with her three goals. Single goals came from Kate Schladenhauffen and Chandler Duke.

Brook girl’s coach Rhonda Berry-Gomez felt her team looked, “Pretty good at the Woodlands (but) we have many things still to work on.

“Our hope is that during the I-10 Shootout (next tournament), we will continue to grow and improve,” Berry-Gomez added.

In the Brazoswood tourney, Clear Creek’s girls posted identical 3-0 shutouts over Brazosport and Angleton. Scoring two goals for the Wildcats against Brazosport was freshman Kristi Leonard and one from junior Alyssa Hill. In the Angleton match, Leonard repeated her two-goal performance, with the third goal coming from senior Kelcie Miller.

The Wildcats and Tomball tied in regulation but Creek won the shootout.

Clear Springs then stopped Creek’s streak when the Lady Chargers shut out the Cats 5-0 on Shelby McDaniel’s hat trick. Other goals were scored by Sarah Colliflower and Kris Johnson. Springs didn’t stop there. The Chargers then went on to down Clements 2-1 on goals by McDaniel and Kayla Cox. In another match, the Wildcats lost to Brazoswood 1-0.

Sarah Heggen, in her first season as Creek girl’s head coach, was pleased with the play of the team, especially the first three games in Brazoswood.

“We moved the ball well and got a lot of shots on goal,” she said. “Communication is very important and I felt the girls did a great job.

“We played five games in three days and it started to catch up on Saturday. I thought Springs did a great job of taking advantage. They finished their scoring opportunities and we didn’t. (Our) communication broke down and we made simple mistakes.”

Heggen sat out a couple of her players due to muscle soreness.

“I was happy with the results of the tournament (4th place). We have a few things we need to work on, but I am happy with the way the girls played,” she added.

In the Lady Highlander tourney, the area got a preview of the top two ranked girl’s teams The Woodlands and Clear Lake. They played to a 0-0 tie but the Highlanders won in a shootout.

Clear Lake coach Andy Gaworecki felt his Lady Falcons showed, “Solid performances overall. We were unbeaten in regulation, which was good, but we still need to find a way to pull out a win in a close contest against a quality opponent.”

Gaworecki, in his second season at the helm, felt the tournament was a valuable experience for the girls.

“I also saw lots of issues we will be spending many practice hours working to correct,” he added.
