Jackson commits to Iowa StateCy Ridge High senior linebacker Princeton Jackson, the reigning Class 5A-District 15 Defensive MVP, verbally committed to Iowa State last week.
“I took a visit there, and I enjoyed the fans, the environment,” Jackson said. “They’ll let me fight for a starting position; I can be a true freshman starter.”
Jackson, a finalist for the Touchdown Club of Houston defensive player of the year, also chose the Ames, Iowa school because he wants to pursue a degree in industrial engineering.
He was leaning towards the Cyclones but was unsure after Gene Chizik left to take the Auburn job. Auburn defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads was named the Cyclones’ new coach last week.
Jackson became the fourth Cy Ridge player to commit to a Division I program. Senior quarterback Russell Shepard graduated at semester to enroll at LSU, senior running back Hasan Lipscomb chose Minnesota and senior offensive lineman Keenan Flax picked Houston.
Cy Ridge went 9-3 and reached the third round of the playoffs, falling to Copperas Cove, 55-48, in Waco.
Rams coach Gary Thiebaud said Jackson has a bright future with the Cyclones.
“Princeton is a great player, and he’s really impressed with the new coaching staff up there,” Thiebaud said.

Club to hold registration breakfast
The Northwest Flyers Track Club will host its annual free information / registration breakfast on Feb. 7 for all boys and girls and their parents interested in joining for the 2009 season. The breakfast starts at 8:30 a.m. at the Cypress Creek Christian Community Center Forum located at 6823 Cypresswood Dr. in Spring.
The event will be highlighted by a special presentation from a member of the USA Track & Field Olympic team.
The Northwest Flyers Track Club is a youth (age 6 -18) track organization, affiliated with USA Track & Field (USATF), that provides a full program of sanctioned “track” events such as sprints, hurdles, middle distance, distance and relays, and sanctioned “field” events such as long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, discus, shot put and javelin. The Northwest Flyers has approximately 195 members, boys and girls. The club was founded 22 years ago by Olympic gold medalist Fred Newhouse to foster the development of youth track & field in the Northwest Houston area.

Klein undefeated
The Klein Bearkats are off to a strong start under first-year coach John Lawhon.
Klein (3-0) has outscored its first three opponents, 9-0, with all the games being played in the Klein Showcase of Champions last week.
The Bearkats also outshot their opponents, 40-8, over the three games.
Carlos Pisani scored two goals to lead the Bearkats past St. Thomas, 3-0; captains Ryan Torgensen and Jeremy Dillman-Colie each scored a goal in a 2-0 victory over Cy Creek and Klein finished the tournament with a 4-0 win over Lufkin.
Bobcats take third
Cy-Fair finished third in the Cy-Fair ISD Tournament last week, defeating Aldine Nimitz, 4-0, Houston Memorial, 1-0, and Houston Chavez, 2-1. They lost to Ft. Bend Hightower, 2-1.
Boys basketball
Cy Woods 70, Jersey Village 46
Jarrod Jones scored a game-high 14 points, and the Wildcats improved to 20-2, 3-0 in district competition on Jan. 6. Cy Woods outscored the Falcons, 26-5, in the third quarter.
Klein 52, Klein Oak 50
The Bearkats edged their District 13 rivals on Jan. 6.
Girls Basketball
Klein Collins 66, Spring DeKaney 30
The Lady Tigers jumped out to a 15-2 lead last Friday en route to a 66-30 win. Senior Lauren Glasco scored a game-high 14 points
