Top players on All-District football; Lanier Coach of Year
By CHUCK HLAVA
All in all, Clear Brook, Clear Lake and Clear Creek enjoyed successful football campaigns and the names of their players on the First and Second All-District teams spell the reason for their good seasons.
The CCISD trio made post-season, along with Dickinson.
Clear Springs, in its first year of varsity, was basically the surprise team in district with wins over several teams including Clear Creek. The Chargers had one player on first team defense and several others on the second team offense and defense. Springs finished 5-5 overall and 2-3 in district.
The Wolverines and the Falcons finished atop the District 24-5A ladder with 5-1 records. But Brook can claim bragging rights since the Wolverines were the only team to defeat Clear Lake, winning 14-13. Brook’s only loss in district came at the hands of Dickinson.
Clear Brook head coach Paul Lanier was voted Coach of the Year in district.
Lanier felt much honored being named coach of the year.
“I think anytime you get an honor from your fellow coaches, it’s something very special,” he said. “Of course, there were other coaches that did a great job, like Troy (Aduddell) from Lake.”
Lanier added that the award is actually spread around at Brook.
“That award is an award for my staff, which did an outstanding job of coaching and motivating this year. Of course, the players are the ones that get it done on the field.”
Overall the Wolverines finished the year 7-4, going 1-1 in post-season. Clear Lake finished 8-3, also going 1-1 in the playoffs. Clear Creek was 5-5 after going 0-1 in post-season. Dickinson finished 8-3.
Other individual awards went to Alvin’s Ashton Jefferson, for MVP, and Galveston Ball’s Justin Williams as Defensive Player of the Year.
Brook, Lake and Creek placed a total of nine players on the first team.
FIRST TEAM OFFENSE: Wolverine Lane Berry starts the first team at quarterback. At running back are Ashton Jefferson of Alvin, Brook’s Brandon Ellison and Lake’s Jarred Mack, along with Brazoswood’s Alvin Samuel.
Wide receivers include Clear Creek’s C. J. McElroy and Brian Boyd. Add to that Ball’s Kenneth Jenkins and Dickinson’s Josh Honc.
Without offensive lineman, there wouldn’t be a good season for any team. Linemen are Jared Biard of Clear Creek, Taylor Beamer of Clear Lake, Ed Preston of Dickinson and Clear Brook’s Austin Wallace. The first team kicker is Clear Lake’s Dustin Hopkins.
