Waller County 4-Hers win reserve national championship honors

Updated: 12.31.08
The Waller County 4-H meat judging team composed of Katie Robinson, Patrick Jones, and Joseph Jones, won Reserve National Champion team honors at the National 4-H Meat Judging Contest hosted at Kansas State University (KSU) on Oct. 28, 2008.  Our team scored a record breaking 2158 out of a possible 2250 which shattered the previous record set last year by the winning team, however the Colorado team scored a record 2169 this year, edging us out.  The 5 day trip which was entirely sponsored by Waller County 4-H Adult Leaders and Parents Association (ALPA) concluded with an exciting awards breakfast above the cattle show arena at the American Royal Show in Kansas City, MO.  Results are as follows:

INDIVIDUAL PLACINGS -

Patrick Jones won 1st place high point individual overall, Joseph Jones placed 3rd high individual overall and Katie Robinson placed 7th high individual overall.  Also, Patrick and Joseph each received a $1,000 and $500 scholarship (respectively) that was sponsored by the Saddle and Sirloin Club of Kansas City.

Katie was 1st place high point individual in pork judging, 5th in beef judging, 12th high in retail cut identification, 4th place in retail cut judging, 3rd place in total judging, and 3rd place in oral reasons.

Patrick won 1st place in retail cut identification, 2nd place in beef judging, 4th in pork judging, 2nd place in retail cut judging, 2nd place (tied for 1st) in total judging, and 2nd place (tied for 1st) in oral reasons.

Joseph won 1st place in retail cut judging, 6th place in pork judging, 11th in beef judging, 4th place in oral reasons and placed 2nd (tied with Patrick for 1st place) in retail cut identification.

TEAM PLACINGS –

Waller County 4-H Meat judging team won:  pork judging, retail cut judging, total placings, and oral reasons.

The team was 2nd in retail cut identification and 4th in beef judging.  Additionally, the team won a $350 travel award that will go back to Waller County 4-H ALPA since they were the sole sponsor for our trip.

The team was accompanied by Richard and Gina Robinson and Coach and Texas AgriLife Extension Agent, Cody Dennison.  Agent Dennison commented, “I am very proud of these young adults and the effort they gave to go and try to win this contest.  We knew we had to show up loaded for bear, so to speak.”  Dennison said, “We had an uphill battle with only a 3 person team.  We couldn’t drop the lowest score like other teams could.”  The team accomplished its goals by:

1) Everyone being in the top 10 (winning 1st, 3rd, and 7th place overall).

2) Everyone on the team won a division (team effort).

3) Everyone shattered old records and scores.

Agent Dennison expressed his heartfelt sense of pride to the team when the team won the oral reasons team plaque.  This signified that our 4-Hers not only understood the concepts of the placing classes, but that they excelled at explaining the reasoning for the placing through the use of self confidence, sound reasoning skills, and extraordinary public speaking skills.

This team has learned much about meat science and judging over the last three years.  On this trip, the team was able to enjoy a tour of Creekstone Farms, a fully integrated beef processing plant in Kansas, that process only source verified Angus beef.  This opportunity gave our youth an inside look at the all natural beef industry and one of the cleanest meat processing plants in the world.  Additionally, visits to Oklahoma State University and Kansas State University campuses on this trip were valuable to the seniors.  Finally, a visit to eat at the famed “Golden Ox” Restaurant in Kansas City, MO was especially enjoyed by the team.  Kansas City is where the Kansas City Strip steak, otherwise known as the New York Strip or Top Loin steak, was started.

Coach Dennison and the team would like to thank the following:

1) Jesus, for answering our prayers for safety and success.

2) The parents – for their time, cooperation, and continued support of which we could not do without.

3) The Waller County 4-H Adult Leaders and Parents Association for their financial sponsorship of the trip and to the community for the support of our Waller County 4-H BBQ fundraiser each year which makes their support possible.

4) The following local establishments for their gracious use of their facilities to practice in over the last year:

Harlan’s Supermarket (Waller & Hempstead), Brookshire Brothers (Hempstead), HEB (Brenham), Central Market (San Antonio), Wal-Mart (Brenham), Poffenberger’s Bellville Meat Market (Bellville), Krolczyk Meat Market (Hempstead), Chappell Hill Sausage (Chappell Hill), Eckermann’s Meat Market (Shelby), Readfield’s Meat Company (Bryan), and Rice Epicurean (Houston).

5) 4-H leader and meat judging coach Roy Heinemann for his guidance, time, and years of experience working with 4-H youth and the meat and livestock judging programs.

6) The Texas Tech Meat Science Dept., meat judging team coordinator - Dr. Mark Miller, and meat judging coach - Mr. Travis O’Quinn for hosting practices.

7) The Texas A&M University Meat Science Dept., Mr. Ray Riley, Dr. Dan Hale - Texas AgriLife Extension Meat Specialist, and the TAMU meat judging team for their help with hosting practices.

8) The Saddle and Sirloin Club of Kansas City, MO and Mr. Paul McKie for sponsoring the scholarships.

9) American Royal, Kansas State University, and the Dr. Jimmy Wise of the American Meat Science Association for organizing and hosting the contest as well as the nice awards banquet.

If anyone is interested in learning more about 4-H and projects like this that develop young people for possible future careers, then please call the Texas AgriLife Extension Office for Waller County at (979) 826-7651.  Meat judging practice for beginners begins in late November.
