AABY releases 2009 dog calendar

Different breeds of man’s best friend will keep each month in Animals Always Believe in You’s calendar full of surprises.

For the second year, AABY encouraged residents around the community to send in their photos of their pets and a panel of judges selected 12 special dogs to grace the pages of the calendar.

“We received about 50 entries for the calendar and each entry was too cute; it was hard for the judges to decide who would get their own page,” AABY founder and executive director Kay Pass said. “If it was not for Hurricane Ike, we most likely would have received even more entries.”

Several judges from the community, including Dr. Katherine Persson, president of Lone Star College-Kingwood, and Kingwood Medical Center CEO Gay Nord, had to look over the submitted pictures and decide who would be a “calendar dog.”

Once the dogs were selected, they were photographed by Charles Falk and all of the runner-up dogs’ pictures are featured on the last page of the calendar.

The 2009 calendar is now available for sale at the AABY Thrift Store and several veterinarian offices around the community.

“It would be hard to select my favorite but there was a trend this year for their tongues to be sticking out in the photo,” Pass said. “I love all of the ‘calendar dogs,’ everything from the Kings Charles Cavalier spaniels to the Jack Russells and the standard poodles - they are all great.”

Last year, AABY did receive several photos of cats and even a horse, but this year, the photos were all of dogs.

Proceeds from the 2009 AABY calendar will help the nonprofit hopefully afford a new building in the future and help with their Serving Our Seniors program.

The SOS program works to provide veterinarian and health care for the animals of senior citizens who might not be able to afford services.

“Every page in the calendar is too cute. We [the judges] definitely could not have picked out just one winner out of our submissions,” Pass said. “This is a great calendar for anyone who loves animals and it goes to a great cause.”
