Healthy attitude: Get fit for the New Year

Denise Foster is getting back into shape by taking the Bodypump class at the Lake Houston Family YMCA. She gave up on her workout program in 2008 and is determined to exercise more in the new year. Read more about the YMCA on page 2A.

When it got to the point that Judy Montgomery did not have help in lifting her disabled daughter, she decided it was time to do something about it.

“Around the time I joined Porter Curves, my husband was injured and was not able to help me lift our daughter,” she said. “So I decided to sign up with Curves and I have reaped a lot of benefits since then.”

The New Caney resident decided to join Porter Curves in May and has not looked back. Although she joined the fitness center for different reasons, she admits that getting healthy and gaining strength has been a big asset.

At the beginning of each year, fitness centers, like Curves, hear many different reasons and goals as to why a potential member wants to join a gym. But two months into working out, members quickly lose their steam.

“Our enrollment numbers increased last January with people who wanted to fulfill their resolutions and we hope that our numbers increase this January,” said Marsha Weiss, owner of Porter Curves.

“We have many people coming in saying, ‘My doctor told me to exercise,’ or ‘I want to get control over my diabetes,’ but after a while they are no longer motivated.”

According to Weiss, the best motivation for people is when they begin to see results.

“For people to succeed, they have to have the just-do-it or stick-to-it attitude,” Weiss said. “When people see results, they feel that they don’t want to exercise, but they do because they know it is working.”

Part of getting physically fit, Weiss said that nutrition also plays a big part. Most people do not eat enough food each day, but what they do eat is not healthy, which is why they are not losing weight, Weiss said. To combat that problem, people should eat five small portions of food each day and exercise at least three times a week.

“I think so many people fall off because we are a society of instant gratification, but people need to realize that it takes a long time to get their body fit,” she said. “Nothing is ever easy, but if it works, then people need to stick with it to see their desired results.”

The desired result for Montgomery was to be able to lift her daughter, find a place to relieve her stress and get herself back in shape.

“Having a membership to Curves gives me a place to go and it is a good environment. I feel a huge difference and to me, it is worth it,” Montgomery said.

“The workouts have helped me with my attitude, my mood and helps me release stress.”

Porter Curves is a women-only membership that gives a total body workout in 30 minutes.
