The Cy Woods High girls basketball team started the New Year with a sound defensive effort Friday afternoon.

The Wildcats (16-6, 3-1) jumped out to a 41-21 halftime lead and defeated District 15 rival Cy Ridge (5-12, 1-3), 65-31 at Cy Woods Gymnasium.

"We've just been working a lot on playing together as a team,"Cy Woods girls basketball coach Virginia Flores said. "I'm just watching to make sure they're giving 100 percent out there on the court."

The Wildcats used pressure defense to force turnovers; they had separate runs of 9-0 and 8-0 in the first half.

Jenny Nash scored a game-high 16 points, Erika Johnson added 12 and Bre Douglas, who recently made the jump from JV to varsity, had 11.

"Our defense helped us win the game, and everyone on our team was doing well," Nash said.

Florence Prince led the Rams with 13 points; Cy Ridge slowed the tempo down to begin the second half, forcing the Wildcats into a halfcourt game.

They scored the first five points of the second half, but Cy Woods adapted and outscored their opponent, 24-5 the rest of the way.

"We've just got to come out and play some tough, hard-nosed defense," Flores said, "(Cy Ridge) works hard, they don't let up and they make you play."

Flores hopes her second-year varsity program can contend for the District 15 championship; she said Douglas has been a welcome addition to the varsity, and Nash is also a key player for the 'Cats.

"Douglas has helped us with depth," Flores said. "We ended up with another post player going out with an injury. She's been able to step up and help us out. Nash is one of my toughest players. She just plays hard, she loves the game of basketball, she wants the ball, and she's a lot of fun to coach."
