Pokemon USA, Inc., a worldwide leader in trading card games, announced its very first 2009 Pokemon Trading Card Game tournament to be played in Tomball.

The Pokemon Trading Card Gambe Tomball City Championships will be held Saturday, Jan. 3.

These free-to-play tournaments will offer local kids the opportunity to participate in an intellectual sport and test player’s Pokemon TCG skills, strategy and creativity while socializing in a safe environment. The tournaments will take place at Haven Games, 212 Main St., in Tomball at 1 p.m.

As the first event in the Pokemon Organized Play Championship Series, players in each of the three POP-recognized age divisions compete for Pokemon TCG booster packs, a City Championship medal and for the honor of being named champion. In addition, all Pokemon Premier Events award Premier Rating points toward a potential invitation to the World Championships taking place in San Diego, Calif. The prime contenders will be USA vs. Japan, however, other players will be attending from European regions.

“Pokemon started as a Japanese anime cartoon that reached total popularity in 1992, branching into trading cards, video games produced by Nintendo and a full toy movement,” Pokemon Spokesperson J.C. Smith said. “The game structure is much like chess as you adjust to an opponent’s moves in one on one battling with character development. Many players even have deck building strategies gaining power points and further developing their characters.”

The Pokemon TCG City Championships is a free event open to all players, regardless of previous participation in any Premier Events. For more information, or to find the City Championships near you, visit www.go-pokemon.com/op/premierevents/championshipseries/city.
