San Jac Tigers stopped in Gold Division opener

A scramble for a loose ball results in this pile-on during the Deer Park Junior High-Friendswood Bronze Division game at the San Jacinto Invitational Saturday afternoon. No. 30 is Daniel Grider who finished with a double-double of 10 points, 10 rebounds and picked off a pass in the game's final minute, setting up the game-winning bucket.

There’s four boys on the Barbers Hill Junior High School 8A basketball team with the first name of Tyler.

That’s three more than the number of free throws the San Jacinto Intermediate School 8A squad converted in their important Gold Division-opening contest with Barbers Hill of the annual San Jacinto Invitational Saturday afternoon.

In shooting an icebox-like 1-of-12 from the free-throw line, the Tigers saw their hopes of winning their own 16-team tournament derailed following a 32-25 loss to Barbers Hill in the Tigers Den.

Barbers Hill, the Gold Division’s No. 4 seed after Friday’s pool play, took out the No. 1 seeds by roaring out to a 12-0 lead. The Eagles almost needed that entire early cushion because head coach Ryan Nygaard’s club cut the deficit to four points twice in the fourth period, but that’s as close as the Tigers would get to earning a berth in the championship game that pitted Barbers Hill against League City Intermediate.

But in the Gold Division championship game Saturday night, League City Intermediate, the number 3 seed, defeated Barbers Hill 38-31. League City won its Gold Division opener by nipping Brookside 41-37.

Although the Tigers were in “The Den,” San Jacinto was staring up at its two-touchdown deficit before it began to show signs of life.

“When you play a good team, you can’t give up a 12-0 lead,” Nygaard said. “We came out totally flat. We fell down 12-0 in the first four minutes. From then on, we outscored them. We just picked the wrong game not to play our best.”

“The kids got a little confidence going and that always helps,” veteran Barbers Hill coach Mike Baird said of the early onslaught. “We had periods where we didn’t look very good but our kids said it’ll come back and they just kept working and we were fortunate.”

The poor free-throw shooting really hurt Nygaard’s club in the fourth period. The club was 1-of-6, missing their last four. San Jacinto could have reduced the deficit to 28-25, but Nick Bernal missed a pair from the line and seconds later, Preston Tounley was draining a bucket at the other end, creating a four-point swing which all but delivered the knockout punch.

Barbers Hill point guard Tyler Thames turned in a strong game of getting the ball up the floor and moving the ball around against a swarming Tigers defense.

“We got going pretty fast and then kind of slowed down going into the halftime. But then we picked it back up,” Thames said.

Thames hit 3-of-4 from the foul line in the final seconds, making sure San Jacinto’s last four-point deficit didn’t shrink any further.

Tyler Toon and Ryland Dutton co-led the winners with seven points and Tounley scored six.

San Jacinto began to bounce back from its 12-0 hole by bridging the two halves with a 7-0 run, getting the deficit down to 19-13 following a 3-point goal by Josh Estrada. Estrada set up his clutch bucket with a great save in preventing the ball from bouncing out of bounds, following a Felipe Serrato block.

But three possessions later, Tounley was hitting shots on back-to-back possessions. One was a score off an inbounds play. The Tigers will have to work on defending an opponent’s inbounds play because two of Barbers Hills final four buckets came off inbounds plays.

Also not helping the Tigers’ comeback bid was a second-half shooting percentage of 27 percent on 7-of-26 attempts.

Saturday night, San Jacinto dropped the Gold Division consolation finals to Brookside Intermediate, 33-31.

In Friday’s pool play, the Tigers clinched their trip to the Gold Division by going 2-0 in Pool D. The club knocked off Lomax 41-30 and Alvin 42-11.

DEER PARK JUNIOR HIGH

TAKES BRONZE TITLE

The Deer Park Junior High 8A squad overcame a five-point second-half deficit to nab the San Jacinto Invitational Bronze crown, following a tense 35-32 win over Friendswood Saturday afternoon.

Daniel Grider sparked the team to the trophy after scoring a double-double of 10 points, 10 rebounds and one huge defensive play.

With his teammates trailing 32-31 and Friendswood electing to go to the stall game, Friendswood tried to pass the ball across the lane, but Grider intercepted the ball under the basket.

With less than a minute to play, Deer Park then used its ensuing possession to score what proved to be the game winner. Guard Grant Mobley fed George Gonzalez, who converted in the paint with 41 seconds remaining. Grider then used a defensive rebound to all but seal the deal with 17 seconds left.

Grider scored four of his 10 points in the fourth period, his final points getting the team within that 32-31 score after a putback.

The team trailed by five points several times in the game, the final moment arriving at 24-19. But Deer Park scored five unanswered points, the last of the points coming from Wilson Carlisle, the son of the late Billy Carlisle, the former Deer Park High School head coach. The court at Cotton Watkins Gymnasium is now named after Wilson’s dad.

Wilson Carlisle would score the opening bucket of the fourth period, setting up Grider’s heroics.

Friendswood was led by Jordan Wood’s 10 points and five rebounds. Noah Johnson and and T.J. Scott tacked on eight points each. Ryan Teel pulled down seven boards.

In Pool A play Friday, Deer Park defeated Nolan Ryan Junior High 37-29, but fell to Thompson 31-25.
