Eight teams at wide open SBISD girls tournament
By MIKE TENNEY
The girls soccer season officially kicks off for Memorial and Stratford Thursday, Jan. 8, when they are two of the host teams in the eight-team Spring Branch ISD girls tournament at two sites around the city.
Play gets underway the first day for all eight teams with two games at Tully Stadium and two more at Grub Stadium before all the action moves to Tully for the championship round games. The championship match will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday at Tully.
“It’s just a little tournament to get us all started,” said Memorial head coach Lindley Amrantos. “I’m sure everybody is like us. They want to find a way to win as many games as possible and see if they can’t get their year started off on a good note.”
The four high schools in Spring Branch ISD along with Dulles, Aldine, Kempner and Channelview are the eight teams that will make up the field. Everybody will play one game Thursday, one game Friday and two on Saturday.
“It’s a grueling test early for everyone really,” said Amrantos. “You’re talking about playing four games in three days and early in the season, that’s tough. But it does give you a great opportunity to see your team play against a lot of different teams and that’s a good thing this early because it really does give you a good idea about your team going forward.”
She said with the season in its infancy, it’s hard to project who might be the favorite in their tournament.
“With soccer, you just never know,” said Amrantos. “It’s 80 minutes and anything can happen. Things can go either way out there. I know I think every team is pretty good and so you just never know. But I think as far as who is going to win, I think its wide open and this early in the season, it’s really wide open.”
She said there may not be a lot of teams, but the ones in the Spring Branch ISD tournament are pretty potent.
“I think there are some quality teams in our tournament,” said Amrantos.
First-round games that first day will begin at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Tully and Grub, respectively.
