‘Cold Comfort’ exhibit to be at Lone Star-Montgomery College

Lone Star College-Montgomery will host the “Cold Comfort,” exhibit at their Matteson-Parrish Gallery. Artist Kim Eichler-Messmer’s work will be on display Jan. 8 through Feb. 6.

Amy Cooper, program coordinator for theater and fine arts said the exhibit is nothing but quilts and from what she understands that is where the comfort part stems from. Cooper said the cold symbolism of the display is based on the artists perceptions and how she perceives things in her work.

“Like bones and teeth and how they (combine) into the fragility of life,” she said.

The chair of arts and humanities picked the arts after looking over some of her work. Cooper said Linda Woodward, chair of art and humanities at LSC-Montgomery went to one of Eichler-Messmer’s shows at Arrowmont School in Gatlinburg, Tenn. She said Woodward also got to view the artist’s work in her studio.

“The art is truly filled by her imagery in her dreams,” Cooper said. “She will display that through the quilt.”

Eichler-Messmer focuses on her subconscious and incorporates themes from her life into her work. Cooper said she combines elements like guilt, family, death, nature and anxiety. She said Eichler-Messmer has stated that a lot of her creations are an abstracted view of her experiences and her environment.

“Dreams and daily life experiences,” Cooper said.

Eichler-Messmer incorporates bones and teeth into her work but the brightly colored threads avoid making the piece appear grim. Cooper said she thinks her usage of the bone and teeth is a way for her to express a different identity. She said guests who attend the opening reception will gain a better understanding of the works.

“It’s completely based on the artist description,” she said. “You can understand the mood or emotion she was going through in creating that work. You are truly going to be able to see it from the eye of the beholder.

The opening reception will be held from 1-3 p.m. Jan. 28 at the Mary Matteson-Parrish Gallery building D. LSC-Montgomery is located at 3200 College Park Drive, one-half mile west of Interstate 45 between Conroe and The Woodlands.
