Businesses, musicians come together in support of Ike victims

Baytown businesses and organizations are gearing up this Saturday, Dec. 20 to assist victims of Hurricane Ike who are still struggling after the destructive storm.

The sounds of the state’s up-and-coming country and jazz artists will fill the Lee College Sports Complex that day as part of a fundraiser spearheaded by community leaders and members of Baytown’s Grace United Methodist Church.

It’s been nearly three months since Ike wreaked havoc on the upper Texas Gulf Coast, and while many communities are well on their way to recovering their losses and rebuilding their lives, many in the Baytown still are struggling to get back on their feet, event organizer Dave Havel said.

“The people of Galveston Island and Bolivar Peninsula deserved all the attention they got after the storm, but there are also people here in Baytown who have lost everything and they’re being left behind,” he said.

Locals businesses such as Amegy Bank, Eshbach Retirement Planning and Lee College have stepped up to sponsor the concert, the second fundraiser in a campaign to raise $500,000 Baytown’s Ike victims.

Saturday’s lineup includes a jazz and swing performance by Dennis Eichler & His Bayou Big Band, followed by the blues stylings of Mean Gene Kelton & The Die Hards.

Hailing from Austin, country musician Sam Sliva & The Good will then take the stage, followed by headlining musician and country music star Cory Morrow.

After the concert Havel said that Grace United Methodist Church will begin the process of evaluating applications for Ike relief aid to insure that the money collected goes to the right people.

“We’re looking for the storm victims who have been denied by their insurance companies and by FEMA. All of the proceeds will stay in Baytown,” he said.

General admission for the concert is $15 and floor seats are available for $20. Tickets are available at the Grace United Methodist Church of Baytown at 304 N. Pruett, the Eshbach Retirement Planning Center at 311 W. Baker and at the Amegy branch located at 1300 Rollingbrook.

Tickets can also be purchased online via Ebay by searching for “Cory Morrow concert” and using the “buy it now” option.

Amegy and Eshbach Retirement are also offering a buy one, get one free special for the first 100 general admission tickets sold.

Gates will open at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20. The Lee College Sports Complex is located at 550 Lee Drive.
