School hosting blood drive to help one of its families

With just a swab from inside the cheek, a person could be the perfect match for someone who needs a bone marrow transplant.

Northwest residents will have the opportunity to help those people who are waiting for that perfect match or who simply need blood.

Covenant Academy, a Christian Classical School in Cypress, is hosting a blood drive at the school Jan. 12 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Donors are asked to give one pint of blood and/or donate some saliva to see if they are a match for someone in need of a bone marrow transplant. All donors will receive a free T-shirt.

Victoria Garrett, parent of a student at Covenant Academy, is an example of the kinds of of the people that could benefit from the donations.

“You just have no idea what this means to me,” Garrett said in an e-mail. “As I lay here on my hospital bed thinking of the news I got the other day – that they found a donor for me – gets me excited and sad at the same time.”

Garrett’s donor isn’t a perfect match at only 8 out of 10.

“I’m excited because without this donor and doing a bone marrow transplant, my leukemia will keep coming back and my children would be left without a mommy,” she said. “I get sad when I think of all the kids, teens and adults who are dying daily from their leukemia because there just aren’t enough donors out there for them to have transplants. I could be one of them.”

Garrett thanked members of the school for all their support and said she wanted to stress the simplicity of being a bone marrow donor.

“I know it sounds scary and complex; however, it is quite the opposite,” she said. “Just to get in the registry, they need a swab of your cheek. That’s it. It will take a few weeks to get you in the national bone marrow registry. If you happen to match someone you will get a call asking if you are still willing to donate.”

Those wishing to participate in the blood drive are requested to contact the school office at 281-373-2233 as soon as possible.

Covenant Academy is located at 11711 Telge Road, Cypress, Texas.
