Cy Woods High School has started new traditions since it opened in the fall of 2006, and last Wednesday afternoon was no different.

Instead of holding a signing ceremony in a classroom or gymnasium, seven college-bound Wildcats signed their National Letter of Intent in the school auditorium filled with their classmates.

It marked the first signing ceremony in school history, since the current 12th graders are Cy Woods’ first group of seniors.

“It’s a very special time for them and an opportunity to do same goal-setting with our younger students,” Cy Woods principal Sue McGown said.

Volleyball players Caleigh McCorquodale (Texas State) and Shannon McClean (Charlotte), swimmer Seraphina Van (Purdue) and baseball players Jeremy Fant (Rice), Michael Hilliard (Sam Houston State), Casey Grayson (Navarro College) and Andy Lada (Navarro College) signed on stage alongside their families.

“You have put us on the map athletically,” Cy Woods athletic coordinator David Jones told the signees.

“Today is a perfect example of attitude, teamwork, persistence and self-discipline.”

Jones said the school will also hold identical signing ceremonies in February and May.

McClean and McCorquodale helped lead the Wildcats to an outstanding volleyball season. The team shared the Class 5A-District 15 championship with perennial power Cy-Fair and advanced to the regional semifinals, where they fell to Dallas Lake Highlands in five games.

McCorquodale, the district’s MVP setter as a junior and senior, enjoyed the ceremony in the auditorium.

“I was really nervous, but it was really fun,” McCorquodale said. “I felt really honored to be up there. I’m very excited. I’m looking forward to the rest of my senior year.”

Fant, one of the top pitchers in the Houston area, will look to lead the Wildcats to another successful season. Last year, they reached the first round of the playoffs in their inaugural varsity season.

Hilliard, a catcher, will miss his senior season with an injury, but he’s looking forward to the spring of 2010 at SHSU.

“The signing was exciting,” Hilliard said. “It lets the whole school know how hard I worked, and everything’s paid off.”

Seraphina Van, an All-American swimmer and the defending 100-meter district champion, chose the Boilermakers over Missouri, Ohio State, West Virginia and Princeton.

“I dreamed of this day,” Van said. “Between education, and the opportunity they’re able to give me, Purdue had the whole package for me.”
