Ravens give rude welcome to Seahawks
The San Jacinto College men’s basketball team was the latest squad Tuesday night to give Lamar State-Port Arthur a rude welcome into Region 14 conference play.
The first-ever conference meeting between the two programs saw Maurice McNeil enjoy his best game of the season with the double-double of 22 points and 19 rebounds as the Ravens captured an 81-76 road victory at Carl Parker Center.
After opening conference with a loss over the weekend, it was a badly-needed triumph for head coach Scott Gernander and his players. Now at 1-1, the team climbed into a share of third place with Angelina, remaining one game back of the leaders.
Lamar State-Port Arthur slips to 0-2, but the loss was considerably closer than Saturday’s 38-point loss to Lon Morris.
McNeil began the week ranked 32nd in the country in the category of scoring average per game. He didn’t hurt that average any with his strong game that also included four blocked shots on top of his 22 points and 19 rebounds. He’s begun conference with a pair of double-doubles.
His production was needed since Lamar State-Port Arthur owned a 42-40 lead at halftime.
Dion Prewster, who had a very quiet conference opener with just five points, proved to be much more active against the Seahawks defense, finishing with 15 points and eight rebounds.
The Seahawks were led in the scoring column by George Williamson and his 18 points. Williamson is trying to pick up the slack for leading scorer Adrian Fontenot, who was suspended last Thursday for violating team rules.
Lamar State-Port Arthur will meet San Jac again on Feb. 11 at Anders Gym.
This is the third consecutive season that the two schools have met, but the first in a conference setting. In 2006 at the Carl Parker Center, San Jac won 87-57, before winning handily again last year at Anders Gym.
With two more conference games to go before hitting the annual Christmas break, San Jac has its eyes set on a 3-1 ledger. They’ll continue that quest on Dec. 3 when the annual Fred Hartman Bridge Rivalry adds a new chapter with the arrival of Lee College at Anders Gym.
