Oak Ridge improves to 5-3; girls basketball roundup

Oak Ridge scored another victory Tuesday night with a 48-36 homecourt win over Clear Springs.

Clear Springs held an 8-5 lead after the first quarter and the game was tight at halftime, with the Lady War Eagles leading 17-16. Oak Ridge (5-3) outscored Clear Springs 14-7 in the decisive third quarter.

“We pecked away after the first quarter,” Oak Ridge coach Molly Gibson said. “I think we started pushing the ball and really getting down the floor. The first quarter we seemed to be a little lackadaisical and we picked it up a notch in the second quarter. The girls shot 23-of-26 at the free throw line so that made the difference too.”

Chelsea Davis led the charge with 17 points for the Lady War Eagles, who are one win shy of their victory total from a year ago.

“We totally recognize that this year we’re starting to really finish games,” Gibson said. “We still have some work to do in the fourth quarter; last year that was their struggle. I think they finally have the confidence to know that they can.

“They’ve seen their shooting percentage go up and they’ve seen their free throw percentage go up. I think when you show kids improvement that also gives a boost of confidence.”

Oak Ridge next plays at Willis Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

College Park wins 13th

“The girls played great defense, and we ran the floor very well,” College Park coach Kip Anderson said. “Everyone contributed.”

College Park will play on the road at Nimitz at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in its next matchup.

Woodlands downed by Atascocita

The Woodlands lost its second straight game Tuesday night, a road matchup against Atascocita, 51-46.
