War Eagles off to 2-0 start
By JAY LANGLEY
A stifling defense and a balanced inside-outside attack helped Oak Ridge defeat Willis 57-37 Friday night at Oak Ridge High School.
The War Eagles (2-0) took advantage of 30 Willis turnovers as guard Logan Griffin and forward Anthony Weems led Oak Ridge with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
In the first quarter it appeared the game would remain close throughout, as neither team built more than a three-point lead with the War Eagles taking an 8-5 lead after the first eight minutes.
But thanks to a quick five points from Griffin, the War Eagles went on a 9-0 run to open up a 17-5 lead halfway through the second quarter.
In the first half the Wildkats (1-1) managed just five field goals and trailed 25-16 at the break. The third quarter started very similar to the second as Oak Ridge built a 14-point lead when guard Alonzo Jefferson stole a pass and sent the War Eagles’ fans into a frenzy with a dramatic one-handed slam.
Former War Eagle Wes Winsmann, who finished with a team-high nine points for the Wildkats, tried to bring Willis back when he hit a three to cut the lead to 37-26. But thanks to a trey from Griffin and a couple of quick buckets by forward Scott Bastian, the War Eagles took a commanding 40-23 lead into the last quarter.
Willis never managed to close the deficit to fewer than 17 points in the fourth. The Wildkats finished the night with more turnovers than field goals made and they missed 15 free throws.
Oak Ridge will play Brenham Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
The Woodlands
Despite a 19-point surge in the final quarter, the Highlanders couldn’t overcome the Bryan Vikings’ strong first-half performance and suffered a 61-47 loss on the road Friday night.
Emmanuel Rivera and Adrian Medina shared top scoring honors with 15 points each as The Woodlands fell to 1-1 on the season.
The Highlanders opened the season with a 69-61 victory over Dickinson earlier last week. Medina led the charge in that game, piling up 14 points and 16 rebounds. Jordan Alpha, Michael Williams and Justin Nelson added 12 points each.
The Woodlands is scheduled to play C.E. King Tuesday at 7 p.m. at home before participating in the Fantasy of Lights Tournament in Wichita Falls Friday and Saturday. Abilene Cooper is the Highlanders’ opening-round opponent.
College Park
The Cavaliers dropped all but one of their games at the McDonald’s Texas Invitational in Pasadena over the weekend.
The Cavs earned a 60-52 victory over Fort Bend Marshall, as Adam Rowe scored 18 points, J.P. Wells added nine and A.J. Myres had eight.
In a 64-56 loss to La Porte, Rowe shared the spotlight with Myres and Eddie Porter — all three contributed 12 points.
In the opening pool play round of the tournament, College Park (1-5) dropped its two games against Atascocita (57-55) and San Antonio Taft (58-54).
Saturday, the Cavs closed out the tourney with a 46-41 loss to Fort Bend Kempner in the third place game of the Division I bronze bracket. College Park went into the fourth quarter with a four-point lead, but was outscored 19-10 the final eight minutes.
“Our defense is coming along, but we’ve been anemic at times on offense,” College Park coach Clifton McNeely said.
Rowe scored 14 points against Fort Bend Kempner, while forward Porter added 12 points and 11 rebounds. Center Sam Ryan hauled down nine rebounds.
College Park is slated to host Houston Worthing Monday at 7 p.m. and visit Kempner Tuesday at the same time.
