Are Freshman Bears, Tigers on TIFI Super Bowl collision course?

The quarterfinal round of the Texas Intercity Football, Inc. (TIFI) youth football playoffs was not very kind to the pint-size gridiron athletes from Pasadena and Deer Park on Nov. 22.

The Pasadena Bears, the San Jacinto Ravens, the Deer Park Tigers and Deer Park Rams were a combined 3-5 in quarterfinal-round action held at the Deer Park North campus complex. Throw in the fact that a South Houston Wildcats sophomore team also went down to defeat in the quarterfinals and the local cities were 3-6 for the TIFI quarterfinals.

But while six clubs saw their 2008 seasons come to an end, three local squads avoided being bit by the elimination bug. Now they’re just one victory away from a berth in the coveted TIFI Super Bowl, set for Dec. 13 at Friendswood High School’s Henry Winston Stadium.

The only Pasadena Bears club still strapping on the chin straps is the Freshman Bears. The Bears kept their season alive with a big 14-0 victory over the Hitchcock Red Raiders.

Standing in the way of a Super Bowl berth is the Alvin Yellowjackets. The two will collide next Saturday at 11 a.m. on Field B at the Deer Park North campus complex.

The Freshman Super Bowl at Henry Winston Stadium is set for 9 a.m. on Dec. 13.

The Bears or the Yellowjackets will meet either the Deer Park Tigers or the Clear Lake Space Raiders as their Super Bowl opponent. The Tigers eliminated the Beaumont Bulls 25-12, while the Space Raiders sent the Deer Park Rams into their offseason, following a 24-0 decision.

The Tigers and Space Raiders will meet immediately after the Bears-Yellowjackets game or approximately at 12:30 p.m.

The only other division that still has some local flavor is the TIFI Juniors Division. That’s where the Deer Park Tigers remain on the prowl for a Super Bowl berth. They knocked off the Clear Lake Falcons 28-12. The Tigers will meet the La Porte Texans next Saturday on Field A at 12:30. The Texans eliminated their rivals, the La Porte Cowboys 27-0.

In the Sophomore Division, the Pasadena Bears were eliminated by the Barbers Hill Eagles 19-0, the La Porte Texans ousted the Deer Park Tigers 18-6 and the La Porte Cowboys defeated the South Houston Wildcats 35-0.

In the Senior Division, the San Jacinto Ravens and Pasadena Bears absorbed tough overtime defeats. The Alvin Yellowjackets scored in the overtime to oust the Ravens 19-13 and the Clear Lake Space Raiders did the same in eliminating the Bears 12-6.
