Bridge sparks holiday giving

The Bridge Over Troubled Waters has a decorated tree in City Hall as part of the city’s Circle of Trees. Poinsettias will be sold at Durret Motor Co. at 5520 S. Shaver and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to help raise money for the organization.

While the holidays are a time for family, home and reconnecting, many are struggling through a period where separation and anxiety only intensifies.

For the women at the Bridge Over Troubled Waters, the holidays can be a lonely time.

The Bridge is a non-profit organization which shelters and services families transitioning out of domestic violence situations.

The Poinsettia Campaign is one way the public can reach out.

The campaign raises funds to help with the general operational services of the Bridge, which, besides providing families with counseling, educational tools and a safe place to stay, must pay its own rent and utilities.

On Monday, Dec. 1, 2,000 poinsettias will be delivered to Durret Motor Co. on 5520 S. Shaver and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., residents can make a difference in the lives of women throughout Harris County.

“For me, this is start of the holiday season,” said Claire Goodrum, executive manager of the Bridge and the spearhead of the campaign.

The holiday season, said Goodrum, brings out the best in the community.

“About this time of year, we start to get calls from the community that they want to support either the Poinsettia campaign or they may want to do other things, like toy drives, to help us at the shelter,” she said. “It just opens the holiday season and you start to see the goodness in people throughout the community.”

Various studies have shown that domestic violence increases during the holiday season.

“Typically, the holidays are a stressful time for any family and if you have a family where domestic violence is prevalent, then you’re more likely to see higher incidences of violence at that time,” said Goodrum.

The Bridge, said Goodrum, tends to see more calls and requests during the holiday season than at any other time of year.

“And with the economy being in turmoil this year, I’m not saying we’re anticipating more request for help, but it’s entirely possible,” she said. “It’s a very busy time for us, but I think it puts everybody back in touch with why we do what we do.”

By purchasing a $12 poinsettia plant at Durret Motor Co., residents keep the shelter available for those who might need it.

“Sure, they could probably buy them cheaper somewhere, but here, they’re giving back to the community,” said Goodrum.
