Gregory “Greg” L. Grigg, deputy chief of police at Tyler (Texas) Police Department, has been named to be new chief at Deer Park Police Department.

Grigg will assume his duty in Jan. 5. The Deer Park City Council unanimously approved the appointment made by City Manager Ronald V. Crabtree.

Crabtree said Grigg, who held the deputy chief position since September 1997, has supervised or been involved in every operational area of the city of Tyler police department over his career and has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a master’s degree in public administration from University of Texas at Tyler. Grigg joined Tyler Police Department as police officer in October 1984. He has a master certification as a peace officer in the state of Texas and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.

Yet the city manager said, “As much as I’m impressed by his professional credentials and his experience and education, I was impressed with his community involvement.”

Grigg is a board member for the United Way of Tyler/Smith County and the South Tyler Rotary Club and served as the annual fund drive committee chairman for the Boy’s and Girl’s Club of East Texas in 2002.

Crabtree said an array of civic activities that Grigg has participated in tells him “his philosophy of community-oriented policing in a very personal way.”

Grigg, who grew up in southwestern Oklahoma, said Deer Park is a very wonderful city with friendly and professional people.

“I’m very excited to be working as new police chief for Deer Park,” he said.

The city manger said the city began the new chief selection process in July with a selection of consulting firm Waters Consulting Group, and that the city received 65 applications by Sept. 19.

The consulting firm screened them and presented a list of 15 individuals to the city. The city manager, along with Assistant City Manager Gary M. Jackson, Human Resources Director Bill Philibert and Chuck Rohre of the consulting firm, selected six finalists to be interviewed in late October.

City management invited two of them for a second interview in early November.

Jeffrey “Jeff” Scott Pynes, chief of police of Freeport Police Department and also acting city manager for the city of Freeport, was the other candidate invited for the second interview. The six finalists included three lieutenants from Deer Park Police Department.

Crabtree said Grigg’s starting salary will be $107,500 per year and that he will have a car provided and be required to live within the city limits. The city manager added Grigg will receive the same benefits as any other city employees.

The city manager recognized Kenneth W. Findley, who has served as interim chief since early May, highlighting his roles in overseeing the department’s budgeting process and leading the preparation and recovery efforts in response to Hurricane Ike.

“I just want to say thank you to Ken for service that he provided during the interim period and will provide until Chief Grigg assumes his responsibilities of Deer Park police chief on Jan. 5,” Crabtree said.
