Small SoHo library big on service

The South Houston Branch Harris County Public Library sits right in the middle of neighborhoods built in the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s.

The building is fairly new, established in 1991, and is relatively small, but the services cover a vast range of ideas, opportunities and possibilities for its community.

“We want to be a place that where people make a connection,” said Martha Fisher, the library’s new senior children’s assistant.

That could be a connection to everything from the independent study and the Internet to literacy, from SAT and GED study guides to a book on Kurt Cobain.

“This is for everybody,” said Fisher. “The South Houston Branch Harris County Public Library services everybody in South Houston, but also everyone in Harris County.”

The library has no borders and library cards require current residential verification, but are free of charge, as are all their services.

Patrons can check out up to 75 items, including books, DVDs, cds or reference materials.

The South Houston branch is one of 26 in Harris County, with more than 1,000 computers with Internet access and all providing access to each other’s resources.

“Even though we’re a small library, all the items in all of our branches are available to all our patrons,” said Fisher.

The computers remain a vital part of the library’s services and are constantly updated to meet the demand, featuring Microsoft 2007 and Rosetta Stone, a language-learning program.

“The main interest is always the computers and we’re always trying to get more,” said Pablo Sanchez, branch supervisor.

“They can communicate with their relatives and have access to the latest technology and software,” said Fisher. “A lot of people see it (Rosetta Stone) on TV, but they cannot necessarily afford the cost.”

Children’s story time, bilingual story time, a venue for community meetings, the access to at least 75 items at a time, the library is situated in the middle of community to serve that community, said Fisher.

“I live here in the community, I’m not driving in from somewhere else,” said Fisher. “I’m part of the community here.”
