TWHS grad killed in wreck
By KASSIA MICEK
A Woodlands High School graduate died from injuries suffered in a wreck Saturday just outside Montgomery County.
Melissa Ellen Blackbird, 18, of The Woodlands, was eastbound on Hufsmith Road around 1:30 p.m. in a 2003 Honda CRV when she lost control of her vehicle and it went into a side skid, said Sgt. Tommy Herndon, of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Enforcement Section. The vehicle left the roadway on the south side of the road in the 9500 block of Hufsmith Road in Tomball and struck a tree on the driver’s side, according to an HCSO press release.
A LifeFlight helicopter transported Blackbird, who was a Baylor University student, to Memorial Hermann-The Texas Medical Center in Houston before she died.
Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at Forest Park The Woodlands Funeral Home, located at 18000 I-45 S., with a memorial service at 1 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Episcopal Church, located at 3901 S. Panther Creek Drive in The Woodlands, according to an entry made on a memorial page created for Blackbird on facebook.com.
Blackbird graduated from TWHS in May.
“She may have had some friends in other classes and those counselors are available to the students,” said Kathy Clark, Conroe Independent School District communications director.
Donna Muir, TWHS advanced placement psychology teacher, recalled Blackbird in her class last spring as an attentive student who got along well with others.
“She was just a sweet, young lady with a bright future ahead of her,” Muir said. “She’s the kind of girl any parent would be proud to have. She was just a model student. I knew she was a student who would be successful academically.
“The whole tragedy of it has just saddened us at The Woodlands High School. We’re just shocked. We can’t imagine this happening at such a young age.”
There were no passengers in Blackbird’s vehicle, and no other vehicles were involved in the accident, Herndon said.
The crash remains under investigation by the HCSO Traffic Enforcement Section.
Messages left with the Blackbird family were not returned by deadline Monday.
