The Clear Lake Falcons celebrated their first two victories of the season with a 3-2 Friday win against Brook-Creek-Spring (BCS) and a 5-2 Sunday victory over Cy-Woods. The pair of wins puts Lake at 2-2-1 for the hockey season.

In Clear Lake’s Friday game, the Falcons got on the board midway through the first period. Shelby Pangilinan dropped passed the puck near the top of the slot. Jason Szafron gathered in the puck, moved towards the corner and scored to make it 1-0 for the Falcons. However, BCS tied the game a few seconds later; and went up 2-1 by the end of the second period.

The Falcons came out with renewed passion in the third. Freshman Jaime Larrea stole the puck at center ice and streaked down the left side, curled around the BCS net and stuffed the puck in on a nice wraparound. With time winding down, and the score tied at 2, the Falcons pressed hard so much of the action was in the BCS end of the ice. With only 30 seconds left in the game, Lake’s perseverance was rewarded. James Pyle fed the puck from the corner to Larrea who was waiting in the slot. Larrea roofed the puck over the diving BCS netminder.

“It was all about heart. In the last period, we had to come back and play against a deficit. The players didn’t get down, they didn’t get on each other and they pulled it out,” said Clear Lake coach Dave King.

He went on to note the friendly rivalry that has existed between Clear Lake and BCS.

“You saw how special the win was to the players as they mobbed each other in celebration after the game,” he added. The Falcons outshot BCS 3 to 1 to earn their first victory of the season.

In Sunday’s action, Lake’s Corey King started the scoring by foiling the Cy-Woods clearing attempt, and getting off a low slap shot that beat the opposing goalie to put Lake up 1-0. The Falcons kept pouring it on as two freshmen, Adam Steranko and Jaime Larrea combined to put Lake up 2-0 after Larrea got the feed from Steranko. The third Lake goal came as Cody Friedrichsen passed the puck back to the point and Sophomore Jason Szafron walked the puck along the blue line to score with a high “twisted wrister”.

Clear Lake went into the third period with a 3-1 lead when the freshmen combined again. Larrea put a pass on the waiting blade of Steranko who fired it home for a shorthanded goal. A few seconds later, Lake got their second shorthanded goal from Larrea who managed to get the shot off while being knocked down near the Cy-Wood net.

The Clear Lake team had success this weekend and also benefited from the solid goaltending of Jarret Key. The Falcon’s next hockey action is Friday, Nov. 21st at Space City Ice Station when they host Kingwood.
