The Clear Lake Falcons Varsity hockey team tied one and lost one in weekend hockey action. On Friday Nov 7th Clear Lake lost a squeaker to the Pearland/ Friendswood Flyers, 2-1. On Sunday Nov 9th, the Falcons played an exciting rematch against the Austin Bulldogs and eked out a 3 – 3 tie.

The tie against Austin was especially sweet considering Lake lost by a huge margin against the same Austin team a week earlier. Austin jumped to a 2-0 lead, but the Falcons came charging back in the second. Lake’s first goal came as Ray Stone fed to Jaime Larrea, who was waiting in the slot to bang the puck past the Austin netminder.

Just two minutes later, Larrea fed Danny Allen who took the puck half the length of the ice to stuff it past the Austin goalie on the glove side to make the score 2-2. Lake’s third goal came as Allen won the face-off and trickled the puck towards the net; Junior James Pyle jumped on the puck to knock it in for his first goal of the season. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs tied it up late in the third, but the Falcons felt great about the game. Falcon’s goalie Jarret Key turned aside 21 shots and played a tough game between the pipes, making several timely saves.

Assistant Coach Dan O’Sullivan indicated the coaching staff was very happy with the play of the Falcons. “From the freshmen on up, it was a great team effort and the results really showed.” He went on to say, “Austin’s a very good team but we played well defensively and our improvement was evident.”

In Friday’s action, Clear Lake started out well in the first period, but lost their intensity. The lone Falcon goal came in the second period when James Pyle rifled the puck to the waiting stick of defenseman Andrew Sayers. Sayers unloaded a hard slapshot which was deflected high over the sprawling Pearland netminder by Danny Allen for the Falcons only tally of the game. Although the Falcons outshot the Flyers by a 4 to 1 margin, Pearland came out on top for the first time in the teams’ history.

The next Falcon’s hockey action is Friday at 7:10 p.m. against their local rival Brook/Creek/Spring at Space City Ice Station Rink; that is followed by a Sunday, Nov 16th game at 7:15 PM at the Willowbrook Aerodrome against Cy-Woods.
