New Caney instructor wins Teacher of the Year

To give back to the schools and recognize an outstanding teacher, Wal-Mart in Porter awarded Susan Wheetley, a teacher at New Caney High School, their Teacher of the Year award.

The U.S. history teacher was surprised Nov. 12 by Principal David Loyacano, Superintendent Rick Cowan and Porter Wal-Mart assistant manager Wayne Christian when the three marched into her classroom to make the announce in front of her students.

“It’s nice to get recognized for a job you do,” Wheetley said. “Even if I didn’t get the award, I would still show up and do my job.”

Each Wal-Mart store collects nominations for the Teacher of the Year award. According to Christian, Wheetley received the most votes.

“Wal-Mart is proud to give back,” Christian said. “I think it helps her class seeing their teacher receive the award.”

Wheetley, who has been with the district 27 years, was awarded $1,000 to purchase school supplies and classroom materials.

Wheetley’s class overwhelmingly agreed that their teacher was deserving when asked by Cowan.

“It’s an indication of the kind of teachers we have throughout the district,” Cowan said.

Loyacano agreed, saying that it was very special.

“It’s a great honor to have one of our teachers recognized by the community.”
