Burglars even taking food, medicine

With the Houston area economy slowing, burglaries are on the increase, keeping Lakeview Police busy. And, it seems, almost nothing is safe.

During October, officers investigated nine burglaries in the El Lago-Taylor Lake Village area -- almost double their usual monthly total.

And, burglars are not just stealing household goods, they’re even taking food and medicines.

Just ask the Domino's Pizza delivery guy who told police that two men stole $50 worth of pizzas from his truck seat while he was busy making a delivery to a customer at the Harbor Point Apartments at 4101 NASA Parkway.

One thief even got caught stealing beer.

Two Taylor Lake Village motorists also suffered losses from their unlocked motor vehicles when a thief stole their Sony IPod MP3 players.

One, valued at $160, was missing from a vehicle at from 4100 Long Grove. The other resident also was missing a radar detector and placed the value of both items at $280.

Two of the burglaries were in the condo storage units at 4001 NASA Parkway.

One resident found a thief had broken the lock on the door to the unit and stolen camping equipment, clothes and a charcoal grill valued at $2,700.

The would-be thief in another storage unit break-in there may have been scared off, police said.

The resident found a broken hasp on the door and found his new, three-chest, stacked toolbox had been moved out of the unit and was sitting in front of it on the sidewalk.

An El Lago resident in the 500 block of Seaway called police to say he had caught a neighborhood youngster stealing beer from his refrigerator.

The juvenile, who police said had stolen beer worth about $20 over a three-day period, made an apology to the complainant with his mother present and was then released to his parents after the resident declined to press theft charges.

Besides beer and pizzas, two burglars made off with a Taylor Lake Village woman's heart medicine.

She returned home to find two men, seen by a neighbor, had broken in, apparently looking for drugs.

They weren't particular, it seems, taking heart medications and antibiotics, valued at $650, she was taking while recovering from surgery.

As if Hurricane Ike didn't leave the residents at The Landing in El Lago with enough problems, one returned to find someone had broken in and stolen approximately $20 in change off of a bookshelf in the dining area.

Still another Taylor Lake Village resident told police that someone had entered her home in the 600 block of Forest Lake Drive and stolen a Dell laptop computer, a credit card and some cash from her purse.

Police said there were no signs of forced entry. Value of the stolen items was estimated at $1,600.

Police said another resident at 4001 NASA Parkway called police to say he had scared off five or six men who had broken into his truck and were attempting to steal it.

An El Lago resident was not so lucky. His truck was stolen from his driveway in the 400 block of Cedar Lane, possibly with a wrecker type of vehicle to tow it, and found stripped and abandoned two hours later by Houston Police.

Lakeview Police also investigated six cases of criminal mischief, three cases of fraud, five reports of property theft, two assaults, 24 alarm calls, six fights and five calls involving family disturbances or domestic violence.
