College Park prevails over Lady Highlanders
By Haylee Spencer
After a runner-up finish in last year’s title game, the College Park Lady Cavaliers conquered District 14-5A rival The Woodlands 71-53 to win the championship in the 60th Annual Conroe Tigerettes Varsity Basketball Tournament on Saturday.
College Park dominated from the start as The Woodlands had no answer to the pressure from tournament Most Valuable Player Monique Smalls and all-tournament selection Nicole Morgan. Smalls had four steals and set up Morgan with five assists as the Lady Cavs jumped out to a 29-9 lead.
A series of screen plays put on by Smalls and Priyanka Duvvuru, opened up the lane for Morgan and Megan Shafer for points against the Lady Highlander well into the second quarter. The Woodlands’ give-and-go offense produced just 14 points against College Park. All-tournament selection Amanda Anderson scored six of those points from two last-minute three pointers.
Sarah Seefeldt added four points from inside the paint. Despite those efforts, College Park held a comfortable 50-23 lead at the half.
Lady Highlanders deployed a man defense that slowed College Park to 12 points in the third quarter, allowing The Woodlands to close within 62-43.
The Lady Highlanders (5-1) never got closer to the 6-0 Lady Cavs than the final margin.
“We played great the first half, but we sputtered in the second half.” College Park head coach Kip Anderson said. “The girls worked hard and we were able to pull (the win) off.”
Despite the loss, The Woodlands coach Dana Bruton remains optimistic.
“You can’t be mad at a team that is 5-1 and has worked hard every game.” she said. “I wish we could take to first three or four minutes of the game back, but other than that we kept up with College Park pretty well.”
Jersey Village defeated Atascosita 51-31 in the third place game, while Bryan defeated Oak Ridge 49-35 to take fifth place. The Conroe High Tigerettes, who defeated College Park in last year’s tournament championship game, dropped a 69-48 decision to Westfield in the seventh place game.
