Extra Innings provides place for practice all year long
By JENNIFER SUMMER
The crack of the bat echoes through the building as the ball whizzes through the tunnel at Extra Innings.
The indoor baseball and softball training center provides a place for players of any age to practice their skills and improve their game for when they are on the field.
Celebrating its one-year anniversary Nov. 10, Extra Innings in Humble serves as a training center for softball and baseball players which includes multi-purpose tunnels, coin-operated batting cages, party rooms for celebrations and sport specific circuit training and workout areas.
“I played softball when I was younger and at Humble High School and now I have two young sons that are very into baseball,” Abbie Heller of Extra Innings said.
“My parents, Beth and Larry Witherspoon, were looking to start a business for when they retired and since we have always been involved and loved baseball and softball, Extra Innings was a perfect fit.”
Heller and her father both left their full-time jobs and now work full time at Extra Innings while Heller’s husband, Tom, and her mother help with Extra Innings but still work full time at other jobs.
Baseball and softball players can use the indoor facilities all season long, and those who are not players but who want to hit a couple of balls are always more than welcome.
Extra Innings is a franchise so it does offer a lot of equipment comparable to other sports stores but it is completely family owned.
“Our location was the second Extra Innings franchise in Texas and it is constantly growing and expanding throughout the state and Houston,” Heller added.
The baseball and softball center also offers party rooms where anyone can celebrate a birthday or other accomplishment; all they have to do is bring the snacks or cake and Extra Innings will provide the rest.
“Our main clientele are players from 7 to 14 years old, but we have adults who come in here to hit some balls and even companies that use our party rooms and batting cages as a team building exercise or stress reliever. We truly have a variety of different people that benefit from Extra Innings; it is a lot of fun,” Heller said.
Extra Innings recently partnered with Humble Baseball and Humble Girls Softball and now provides clinics and circuit training to whip players into shape.
They have a full pro-shop available to customers and also do uniforms to add to their various services offered.
“We have a former NFL player that offers speed, conditioning and agility training which can be applied to any sport and seven baseball instructors on hand to answer questions and help improve players’ games,” Heller said. “We invite anyone encouraged in improving their game or wanting to have fun to come check us out.”
