Dobie bids to extend streak on Rayburn tonight

Dobie will attempt to protect an 11-game winning streak on Sam Rayburn when the Longhorns oppose the Texans in a District 22-5A football game at Newcomb Field. Game time is 6 p.m.

Dobie, still in the hunt for a state playoff berth at 2-3 in the district standings, will attempt to piece together back-to-back district wins for the first time in the 22-5A race.

The Longhorns, who haven’t lost to a Rayburn club since the 1996 season, will attempt to take advantage of a running game that has accumulated some 500 yards more than Rayburn’s.

Dobie has amassed 1,121 yards to Rayburn’s 600 yards. It has been the ground attack that has shown the most flash by both clubs because the passing numbers are very thin by Week 9 standards.

Defensively, Dobie ranks sixth in the district, yielding 264.6 yards a game and Sam Rayburn is seventh at 337.3.

Rayburn’s defense must contend with the likes of ballcarriers Anthony Phillips, Derek Spiller and Randy Owens. Phillips leads the group with five touchdowns, but Spiller is the leading yardage guy with 456. Another cause for alarm if one’s a Rayburn fan is Spiller’s ability to return kickoffs a good distance. He tops the district with a 39.71 average.

For the first 39 meetings, Dobie leads the series 26-13. The reason Rayburn has had such trouble with Dobie over the years is the fact the team has trouble scoring against the burnt orange. During the 11-game losing streak, Rayburn has not scored more than 14 points in any of the games. And when the Texans did top Dobie in 1996, Rayburn was still held to 14 points in a 14-6 victory.
