Bay Area Christian (3-1, 2-0) remained perfect in district play, as the Broncos easily handled Pope John XX111 by a final score of 48-14 last Friday night at Bay Area Christian High School.

The next contest will take place 7:30 p.m. Friday at Baytown Christian, who lost to Cypress Christian in action held last Friday.

“We are taking all of our games one game at a time,” head Broncos coach Darwin Pennye said. “We know that Baytown Christian has lost to Cypress Christian and to Pope John XX111, but we will prepare for them just like we would anyone else. It would really make their season if they were able to knock us off.”

The Broncos took control in the early stages against the Lions, with fullback Will Weeks scoring on a two-yard touchdown plunge with 10:17 left in the first quarter.

Karlis Ercums made it 14-0 with 5:53 remaining when he scored on a five-yard touchdown run for Bay Area Christian.

It became 21-0 when Trace Burrows broke free for a 34-yard touchdown dash midway through the second quarter.

Weeks soon added his second touchdown of the match up, this time occurring on a 40-yard run with 5:01 remaining in the second quarter.

It became 34-0 when Codie Henriques came through on a 20-yard touchdown run with 1:18 left in the first half of play.

Burrows came through again with 8:10 remaining in the third quarter when he scored on a 73-yard scamper that increased the Bronco advantage to 41-0 at this juncture.

The final Bronco points of the night were added when sophomore fullback Tyler Henry crossed the end zone via a one-yard run with 5:45 left in the third quarter of play.

The Lions finally scored with 11:55 remaining in the match up, when Lekan Kassim capped off a successful drive by scoring on a three-yard run for Pope John XX111.

Senior Lion running back Ross Selsor concluded all scoring in the contest with a one-yard touchdown run with 7:21 left in the football game.

The well-rounded Bronco rushing attack was led by the speedy Burrows, who picked up 146 yards on eight carries. Bay Area Christian finished with 401 rushing yards on 37 carries in the contest.

Henriques followed with 96 yards on eight carries, while Weeks finished with 65 yards on five carries.

Quarterback Matt Hand completed six of 24 passes that netted 120 yards for Pope John XX111, while Austin Kennedy countered with two of seven completions for 62 yards.

“We had some explosive plays,” Pennye said. “James Meersman made a big 56 yard catch in the first quarter, and Trace Burrows had a huge 73-yard touchdown run. We wanted to be able to move the ball well, and we also wanted to have the ability to make a quick strike when we needed to.”

Pennye added, “We emptied our bench for the entire fourth quarter, and I was glad to see that everyone played. Our goal is to get better each and every week regardless of our competition. We want to go further in the playoffs than we went last year.”
