Pirates fall to the Wildcats

Homecoming night for the Pirates football team should be self motivating despite not winning a game so far this season. However, winning was not on their minds as they were faced with injuries from key players.

They also had to worry about a tough Splendora Wildcat team that is 2-1 in district.

Pirates’ head coach Shane Hanks had to motivate his team to just play and convince them that they can overcome their setbacks.

Hanks include in his pep talk that Emmit Gustafson will be the starting quarterback as well since his starting or back-up quarterbacks are out due to concussions they received the week before.

“It was Gustafson’s first time at quarterback and we did really well despite not having Raghib Ellisor who was out all game. Without him, we couldn’t pass,” Hanks said.

The Pirates had to adjust their mental game into focusing solely on defense, which they did, but the game concluded with them losing to the Wildcats 15-6.

The Pirates’ defense held the Wildcats all game allowing a total of 49 passing yards and 200 rush yards.

“Defensively we played great. We had to make it a defensive game, which we did,” Hanks said.

The Pirates’ offense struggled on the other hand without their key players as they had a total of 19 rushing yards and 42 passing yards.

The Pirates have had some hills to climb this season, but they still have positive attitudes and have not yet given up on their goal of making it to the playoffs.

“We are playing hard. Everyone is still upbeat and if we are going to do something in district we have to start now,” Hanks said.

The Pirates will play this Friday in Cleveland to take on the Indians who are undefeated in district and have only allowed two touchdowns on them so far this season.

“Hopefully we can force them into some uncomfortable situations and take advantage of them,” Hanks said.
