Booths on sale for Annual Missouri City Community Garage Sale
By DIANE TEZENO
Local resident Brenda Richardson will be one of the estimated 100 vendors at the 5th Annual Missouri City Community Garage Sale and Craft Bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 1 from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Civic Center Complex, located at 1522 Texas Parkway.
Each year the city-sponsored garage sale and craft show attracts hundreds of buyers in search of a bargain.
An area resident and an accounts payable technician with the City, Richardson has participated in the annual event for the past three years and looks forward to the event again this year.
“I do it as a hobby, someone else may have something that the community can use; one person’s junk is another person’s treasure,” said Richardson, who creates custom-made clothing, household and floral products.
The Fresno resident’s hand-crafted products include cartoon character themed children’s scrubs, pillows, afghans, throws and floral arrangements.
A friend of Richardson’s also participates in the annual community garage sale and sells custom bedding.
Richardson looks at the event as not only an opportunity to sell her products, but to get to know others in the community.
“It’s a people thing, being out among the neighbors in the community and having an opportunity to mingle,” said Richardson.
Last year she sold $500 of her custom creations to patrons at the community garage sale and hopes to have similar success this year, said Richardson.
The city-wide event invites area residents to purchase booth space to sell a range of personal items.
Products sold in the past have included clothing, computers, household items, appliances, home decor, arts and crafts, handmade jewelry, purses and toys, according to coordinators.
"This is the perfect event for anyone wishing to clean out their garage and sell any unwanted items without having to worry about the logistics and hassles of a garage sale themselves,” said Jennifer Milam, recreation specialist.
“We do all of the planning for you; you just bring your items and yourself.”
An 11-year-employee with the City, Richardson was inspired to give several of her pillows to a patron of the event who attended last year.
“She was admiring the pillows and said they ‘were nice’ but she had six kids and couldn’t afford to buy them,” said Richardson.
Last year, the City made arrangements for sellers to exercise their generosity by donating unsold items to the Fort Bend Women’s Center.
Coordinators of the event are making similar arrangements with a local non profit for unsold items from this year’s event.
According to Milam, the city is also seeking a non-profit groups to sell breakfast and lunch items at the event, with proceeds from sales benefiting the nonprofit.
Spaces are given out on a first-come, first-served basis, and may be purchased in person only, Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Community Center.
Booth assignments will be given at the time of registration, according to coordinators.
The cost for booth space, after Sept. 30, per the vendor application, is $15 for an uncovered booth, $20 for a covered booth, and $40 for an extra-large booth space.
To obtain an application, individuals may stop by the Missouri City Community Center at 1522 Texas Parkway or visit www.missouricitytx.gov.
"Booths are on sale now and selling fast" Milam said.
