Hurricane Ike-Deer Park update
Following is storm recovery information for Deer Park residents:
The city’s water continues to be safe to drink throughout the duration and aftermath of the storm. There was and is not a need to boil water in Deer Park as a result of this storm. While some wastewater facilities remain on generator power, the wastewater system continues to function properly.
CenterPoint Energy knows the location of the power outages and requests customers call only to report safety concerns, such as downed power lines or natural gas leaks. CenterPoint Energy states that its crews are ready to respond to any gas emergencies resulting from Hurricane Ike. For safety issues only, call CenterPoint Energy’s Customer Service at 713-207-2222. As of 5 a.m. Tuesday, CenterPoint reports 25 percent of customers in the Deer Park zip code (77536) to be without power. Normal collection schedules for household rubbish are in effect. Heavy trash will be picked up continuously throughout the recovery process. Citizens are asked to cut limbs to lengths of no more than 4 foot and stack at the curb. Please do NOT place debris on fire hydrants. Residents are allowed to bring limbs & brush only to the East side of the Jimmy Burke Activity Center, located at 500 W. 13th St. between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.
A Wi-Fi hotspot is available at the Deer Park Public Library, located at 3009 Center. Some computers are available as well as power strips if residents wish to bring their own laptops.
Those in the counties designated for assistance to affected residents and business owners can begin the disaster application process by registering online at www.fema.gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or 1-800-462-7585 (TTY) for the hearing and speech impaired.
Information regarding Hurricane Ike disaster-related unemployment benefits is available from the Texas Workforce Commission. To apply, file online www.texasworkforce.org Telephone: (281) 983-1100.
DPISD – school will start for ALL DPISD students on Thursday, Sept. 25. Students should attend school Thursday at the usual time and location.
Also, Monday, Sept. 29, was previously scheduled as a student holiday. It will now be a regular school day for all students.
All certified and administrative employees should report for duty Wednesday, Sept. 24, at their regular work location.
All hourly employees should report for duty at their regular work location on Thursday, Sept. 25. For more information see www.dpisd.org.
LPISD — La Porte ISD has announced that classes will resume on Monday, Sept. 29. For more information see www.lpisd.org.
Contractor registration — in recognition of the possibility that some contractors, during the recovery phase of Hurricane Ike, may prey upon those in need of reconstruction services, supplies and general assistance, the City of Deer Park is hereby adopting the following policy effective Sept. 19.
Any contractor performing construction/reconstruction services for property damaged by Hurricane IKE shall be required to register with the City of Deer Park Police Department prior to commencing work. Registration shall be required regardless of whether or not the contractor is based out of a building, a vehicle, or an open-air site, and whether or not temporary or permanent.
Contractors are required to register at the Deer Park Police Department, located at 2911 Center, during the hours of 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday-Friday. For questions call Inspections at 281-478-7270.
Construction Permits – No permit is required for residents to begin work and there will be no charge for disaster recovery related permits. Although no permit is required to begin work residents should call 281-478-7253 or 281-478-7270 and provide their name, address, and work to be done.
Pools – Pools should be secured with some type barrier or fencing for safety reasons.
