City officials approve name for Missouri City golf course

Updated: 10.03.08
Missouri City officials have approved a name for the city’s first public golf course.

The former Quail Valley Country Club golf course has been officially dubbed the “Quail Valley Golf Course” in a recent council vote on Sept. 25.

The name of the recently acquired course aligns with resident input from a recent survey conducted by Creative Consumer Research.

"Citizens preference was to continue to build upon the long heritage and strong reputation of the property, and Council supported their wishes," said Missouri City Mayor Allen Owen.

CCR principals are Missouri City residents who offered and conducted the statistically valid survey at no cost to the City.

The survey asked residents' input on the new name, as well as their recreational interests and suggestions for the use of the remaining 150 acres of the property not used for golfing purposes.

"It was a great opportunity to not only ask about name preference but also how citizens envisioned the use of the property. Overwhelmingly, they liked the creation of a gathering place such as a community center that could be used for both public and private functions," said Owen. "We are an active community, and the most popular ideas for the 150 acres not used for golf were walking, hiking and bicycling."

At the special meeting City Council also approved an agreement with USA Partners Sports Alliance.

“This group is skilled in fundraising, event packaging and sports complex management, and we are looking to them to ensure the golf course remains a premier location attracting visitors not only from the area but from throughout the United States,” said Owen.

“With our being named by Money magazine as one of the top cities to live in America, we are receiving more attention as a destination community.”

The Missouri City major said he would like to keep the momentum going.

“The Quail Valley Golf Course is a great opportunity to showcase our City,” said Owen.

USA Partners Sports Alliance also will be developing programs and events that will ensure the 400 acres of green space achieve a status of "featured destination" for people of all ages.

The Alliance has a similar agreement with the city of Pearland that could create synergy between the two cities for complementary sports activities. One example includes a possible linkage between a Pearland sports complex that offers softball and baseball events with the Quail Valley Golf Course.

USA Partners will also be organizing a fund-raising golf tournament in the near future that features a national mentoring program as a way of attracting young people from around the state and country.

The City has agreed to pay USA Partners $175,000 if it reaches the goal of raising $1.5 million within 180 days. That amount is refundable in the event the company does not attain its goal, according to a city press release.

“Hurricane Ike set us back a bit, but after taking care of our citizens, City crews now are busy cleaning up the golf course, and we have the full 18 holes open on the La Quinta Course,” said Owen.

“We currently are evaluating when and if to repair the current clubhouse that suffered from the storm. We heard our citizens’ comments in the recent survey about wanting a community gathering place on the property. We continue to evaluate how best to meet achieve this goal,” said Owen.
