Volunteers, donations needed
Volunteers are urgently needed to assist with Hurricane Ike efforts. Interested individuals may assist at various locations throughout Houston and Harris County, including the FEMA PODs and area nonprofit agencies and shelters.

Nonprofits may also call the volunteer line with requests for volunteers.
The staff and students at CCISD are not twiddling their thumbs waiting for school to begin.
Student volunteers have launched Operation CRAYON (Children Rallying Assistance for Youth of Need) to help the students who have lost so much in the storm.
Operation CRAYON is a clothing and school supply drive run by students of CCISD.
The following items will be needed for students in kindergarten through high school.
New or gently used clothing
Standardized dress attire
New backpacks
School supplies
New or gently used tennis shoes or other shoes that are school appropriate

Donations may be taken to McWhirter Elementary, 300 Pennsylvania Ave. in Webster.

Interfaith Caring Ministries has opened a Hurricane Ike Relief Center in the old Palias Royal building, 231 West Main in League City.
The center is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Donations only accepted during business hours.
Needed donations: Rice, peanut butter, jelly, biscuit mix, jello, coffee, macaroni and cheese, pasta, pasta sauce, canned milk, dry milk, baby food, formula, can goods, bottled water, nonperishable foods, shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, baby wipes, diapers-all sizes, detergent, toilet paper, feminine products, sheets, blankets, pillows, towels, washcloths, pots & pans, plates, glasses, baby bottles, silverware, air mattresses, clothing of all sizes, new undergarments of all sizes and shoes of all sizes.
The center is also in dire need of volunteers to man the center, sort donations and prepare grocery orders.
“We are also in great need of tables, clothes racks, and some type of temporary wall structure,” Director Arden Stone said.

Residents who wish to volunteer in Seabrook may contact Ann Vasquez and Jerry Chavez at 281-474-2289 or go by the tent in front of City Hall to sign up.
Clothing and other donations will be collected at the First Baptist Church of Seabrook on Highway 146.
The Houston Food Bank is calling for volunteers to help sort, process and box food and other necessities for distribution to its member agencies -- church pantries, shelters and other relief agencies -- to assist with recovery from Hurricane Ike.
Volunteers ages 8 and older are needed between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily at the Houston Food Bank, 3811 Eastex Freeway.
Volunteers may register in advance at www.houstonfoodbank.org or in person when they arrive.
Volunteers are asked to wear closed-toe shoes and shirts with sleeves. For more information, contact the Houston Food Bank at 713-223-3700.

Canned vegetables, tomatoes, tomato sauce
Soups with meat and/or beans, meal-in-a-can (easy on salt and fat)
Cereals and cereal bars (easy on sugar and fat)
Pasta, spaghetti, macaroni, noodles
Packages of dry beans
