Law enforcement officials mourn retired officer
By Elliott Cochran
Local law enforcement and city of Conroe officials are mourning the loss of a retired police officer who gave more than 30 years of service to the county, the city of Conroe and the Conroe Independent School District.
Calvin Lee Blake, 69, died Monday in Conroe, leaving behind a legacy of service with the U.S. Navy, the Conroe Police Department and the Conroe ISD Police Department. Friends, however, remember Blake first as a caring person.
“He was a great man and a caring man – certainly a great mentor in my career,” Jeff Laurent, a detective with the Conroe Independent School District Police Department, said. “Outside of the job, he treated my children as if they were his own.”
Laurent said he was introduced to the law enforcement profession by Blake, who he worked with at CISD for eight to 10 years.
Blake’s career included stints as an officer with the Conroe Police Department, a captain with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and a captain with the Conroe Independent School District Police Department. He also served as a Montgomery County constable, according to his obituary.
Blake was the first law enforcement officer to be assigned strictly to all Conroe school district campuses, which led to the creation of the Conroe Independent School District Police Department, his obituary states.
Conroe Mayor Webb Melder met Blake when he was in high school, and said during their 42 years of friendship, Blake’s guidance helped many students in CISD.
“Calvin encouraged a lot of young kids to stay in school and helped a lot of kids stay out of trouble,” he said. “For the kids who got in trouble, he was willing to give them a second chance and help them move on down the road of life.”
Although he did not work beside Blake, Montgomery County Sheriff Tommy Gage said Blake was a respected friend.
“I’ve known him for years and years,” he said. “He made a lot of friends along the way, and I’m certainly glad I was one of them.”
Blake is survived by his wife, Janet, his brother, Floyd Lee Blake and his son, Calvin Lee “Beaver” Blake Jr., plus a number of grandchildren and extended family members.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Metcalf Funeral Home, located at 1801 E White Oak Terrace.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at The Ark Family Church in Conroe, located at 450 Humble Tank Rd.
