Two-year manhunt comes to an end

A former Missouri City resident, Christopher Wendell Davis, was sentenced Friday, August 29, in the courtroom of 75th District Court Judge C.T. “Rusty” Hight. Davis was given a total sentence of 35 years in prison for drug charges, bond jumping and failure to appear.

Joe Warren, Liberty County assistant district attorney, handled the case for the prosecution.

“He was arrested on Nov. 12, 2003 for transporting over 400 grams of cocaine. He pleaded guilty in June 2006 and his case was reset for August 11, 2006,” said Warren.

But Davis disappeared before he could be sentenced.

“He had a plea agreement for which he would have served four to five years before being paroled,” said Warren, adding that the plea agreement wasn’t an option for Davis after he fled.

Davis now faces 20 years in prison for the drug charge and another 15 years for his repeated felony failure to appear charges. The prosecutor could have asked for a 25-year sentence for the second of those charges, but agreed to drop the failure to appear charges down to a second degree felony.

He will not be eligible for parole for at least 8.7 years.

“That is the absolute minimum he can serve,” said Warren. “Realistically, he will serve 10-12 years before he is eligible.”
