Special to the Villager

Four individuals and one business have been selected as the 2008 Hometown Heroes. Ed Chance, Jacque Everson, Dr. Daniel T. Hannon, Barbara Holland and The Woodlands Development Company are the honorees that will be recognized and praised for their many contributions to the community at The Woodlands Celebration of Excellence Gala, benefiting Interfaith of The Woodlands.

The gala will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2008 at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel and Convention Center, according to Karen Hoylman, honorary chair for the event. The 2008 Hometown Heroes were chosen by a Selection Committee composed of Hometown Heroes alumni, a group that includes 71 residents of The Woodlands and five businesses that have contributed to the educational, civic, cultural and spiritual fabric of the community. The annual tradition of honoring Hometown Heroes began in 1999 as a part of The Woodlands 25th Anniversary Celebration and has continued ever since.

“The Hometown Heroes are those who consistently give through their commitment of time, hard work, compassion and dedication,” Hoylman said. “Whether they are helping in a crisis, or improving the quality of life in their community every day, the Hometown Heroes set an example we all can follow.”

Ed Chance, Montgomery County Commissioner Precinct 3, and his wife of 45 years, Carol Chance, have made Montgomery County their home since 1967 and have lived in The Woodlands since 1979. Over and above the responsibilities of managing Precinct 3, Commissioner Chance has always found time to give back to his community.

Chance has served as a volunteer, director and fundraiser for a number of community causes including the 100 Club of Montgomery County; the American Heart Association; Crime Stoppers; Fellowship of The Woodlands; Houston Galveston Area Council; Montgomery County Fair South County Buyers’ Group for the FFA; ORWALL; Rotary International (past recipient of the Rotary Paul Harris Fellow Award); South Montgomery County Woodlands Chamber of Commerce; South Montgomery County EDP; South Montgomery County YMCA; and The Woodlands Christian Academy.

Chance has taken the lead in significant environmental developments including the Spring Creek Greenway Project and the innovative Montgomery County Precinct 3 Recycling Program as well as been instrumental in helping to develop and manage the county’s Northstar Traffic Management System and the Montgomery County Emergency Services Training Facility.

Commissioner Chance has been recognized by his peers and colleagues with numerous awards including the Trail Blazer Award for the Spring Creek Greenway Project presented by Houston Wilderness; the Environmental Impact Award from the North Houston Association; the 2008 Best Practice Award for Innovation in Community Improvement for the Precinct 3 Recycling, Reuse & Household Chemical Waste Complex from the Texas Association of Counties; and the 2007 Best Practice Award for Innovation in Technology for the Northstar Advanced Traffic Management System from the Texas Association of Counties.

Jacque Everson has been a resident of The Woodlands since 1993 and has embraced the community since her arrival. She is an active volunteer for the Montgomery County Women’s Center (MCWC) where she devotes a wealth of her time. Everson is a board member for Reaching Pines, a supportive residential community for women transitioning from the shelter of the MCWC as well as a volunteer during the holiday season in the Women’s Center “Adopt a Family” program.

Everson makes an effort to devote her time where she can in the community including The Woodlands Pavilion Board of Directors, Doctor’s Outreach for Community Service (DOCS) Board, The Woodlands United Methodist Church Board and Delta Gamma Foundation Chairman of the Board. Also, Jacque and her husband, Dr. Lloyd Everson, M.D., continuously open their home to host charity functions.

Everson is also very active in the lives of her three children (two of which reside in The Woodlands with their families) and four grandchildren. “Everyone that I have ever spoken to that has met or encountered Jacque, leaves the conversation inspired. Somehow she has a way of making people want to better themselves and do better things,” says her daughter-in-law Laura Everson. “She truly has inspired the lives of many people in this community, including me.”

Dr. Daniel T. Hannon, his wife Judy, and their son arrived in The Woodlands in 1991 to form Christ United Methodist Church, where he now serves as senior pastor. Despite serious health concerns, Hannon has been an integral part of The Woodlands giving tirelessly to the church and the community.

Hannon has volunteered numerous hours to Conroe ISD, serving on several committees. He was a member of the 2004 Task Force Planning Committee and was instrumental in the 2004 Conroe ISD Bond Referendum. The committee and Hannon’s hard work assisted in the development of the Conroe ISD Sports Complex, said Dr. Don Stockton, superintendent for Conroe ISD schools. Since 1992, Hannon provides pre-game inspiration to The Woodlands High School Varsity Football Team.

Hannon is a valued member of the Board of Directors for Interfaith of The Woodlands and has served as past president of the Board. He has also served as a member of the Montgomery County Interfaith Hospitality Network Board of Directors. Hannon is a member of The Woodlands Rotary Club and is a past recipient of the Rotary Paul Harris Fellow Award. He is also active with the Boy Scouts of America and Habitat for Humanity.

Barbara Holland, her husband Lonnie, and their two daughters moved to The Woodlands in 1978. The entire family including the additions of spouses and five grandchildren live in The Woodlands today. For decades, Holland has been a force for many non-profit organizations in The Woodlands. She is probably best known for her role in founding the Academy for Lifelong Learning at Montgomery College (now Lone Star College – Montgomery) and her work at Montgomery County Women’s Center (MCWC). Most recently, Holland has served on the Board of the MCWC, where she chaired the successful Wine Tasting Fundraiser for two years. She is currently the president-elect and is chairing the MCWC’s Reaching Pines program.

Holland has been involved with and attained honors from a long list of organizations including member of the Board of Directors of Rotary Club of The Woodlands (second woman to join the club); member of the Foundation Board of the Montgomery County Hospital District; chair of the board of the South Montgomery County Woodlands Chamber of Commerce; Board member of the Montgomery County United Way; member of the Advisory Board of Big Brothers and Big Sisters; member of the Montgomery County Children’s Advocates Board; mediator for the Montgomery County Mediation Center; chair of the Montgomery County Association of Realtors; Realtor of the Year; and YMCA Woman of the Year.

U.S. Representative, 8th District of Texas and original Hometown Hero Kevin Brady had this to say about Holland: “Barbara embodies the belief that actions speak louder than words, that giving back to the community is a responsibility of each of us – and she gladly contributes her time and energy year after year because she believes in The Woodlands and what our community represents.”

For the past 34 years, The Woodlands Development Company has been a steadfast and visible supporter of The Woodlands’ community. The Woodlands Development Company supports over 80 local non-profit organizations and events each year through its Good Neighbors program.

Recipients of both funding and volunteer support from The Woodlands Development Company include Boy Scouts of America, CASA, South Montgomery County Woodlands Chamber of Commerce, The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, Education for Tomorrow Alliance, Humane Society, Interfaith of The Woodlands, Kiwanis, Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Celebration in The Woodlands, Montgomery County Friendship Center, Montgomery County Food Bank, South County Library, local high school scholarships and schools, Lone Star College Foundation and many more. Employees also serve as volunteers for local organizations and events such as the Montgomery County Friendship Center’s Meals on Wheel program, The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival, Montgomery County United Way and the Montgomery County Women’s Center. In addition, the developer has donated land for neighborhood parks and three South Montgomery County YMCA locations.

The Woodlands Development Company also sponsors many community events like Arbor Day, the Star-Spangled Salute Independence Eve Concert at The Pavilion, Earth Day, Operation Graduation, the Red, Hot and Blue Festival and The Woodlands Wildflower Festival.

The developer has received numerous awards including the 2005 and 2006 Humanitarian of the Year Award from the Greater Houston Builder’s Association, the 2004 Environmental Impact Award from the North Houston Association and the 2002 Drum Major Award from the Martin Luther King, Jr. Drum Major Award committee.
