Dobie, Channelview set for first-ever meeting

By ROBERT AVERY
Updated: 08.28.08
Dobie and Channelview make their first-ever acquaintance on the football field tonight when the Longhorns open their 40th season with a trip to Channelview.

Game time is 7 p.m.

The Longhorns will be attempting to win their first opener in three seasons, but it won’t be easy because Parry’s Power Guide lists Channelview as the clear favorite.

While Dobie suffered through a 2-8 season record, Channelview only had moderate better success after a 4-6 campaign. That means there will be two hungry programs on the field tonight, bent on showing their respective squads that they’re an improved squad this year.

The Falcons will bring some speed to the opening-night table and it will be led by the likes Denzel Granderson who will be found in the backfield at tailback, while tight end Ernest Thompson brings good height and good speed to his position.

Dobie can’t wait until district to begin showing it has improved its defense. After back-to-back down years, the Longhorns need to start displaying it tonight and build some momentum.

If the defense can produce some three-and-outs, that will make the job easier for returning lettermen Randy Owens and Anthony Phillips, who have the potential to be big-play type athletes.

They’ll be working behind an offensive line that will be led by Cody Catney, Rodell Duff and Mario Villa.

NOTES: Dobie is 2-6 for season openers this decade. … This is the seventh consecutive letter C-starting non-district opponent for the Longhorns. Baytown Lee in 2005 was the last school that Dobie played that didn’t start with the letter C.
