South Houston takes reps vs. varsity

Updated: 08.25.08
In case South Houston saw any major wrinkles during its scrimmage with Houston Austin Saturday, at least time is still sort of on the Trojans’ side to iron out those wrinkles.

The only local squad that won’t be opening the 2008 campaign in August, a young Trojans squad applied its opening two weeks of fall drills towards an actual opposing team at Newcomb Field.

“We had some areas that we felt gave us a good look in what we’re trying to find. When they’re young, they’re going to make a lot of mistakes,” South Houston head coach C.L. Whittington said.

Like other football camps, Whittington didn’t appreciate the soggy week the area just experienced because the Trojans were forced inside when his young squad needed to be outside. That slowed down preparations for not just Saturday’s scrimmage but preparations for their opener on the road against Baytown Sterling on Sept. 5.

“It was the first time we had the chance to really get out there and hit so we were rusty that way,” Whittington said. “As they played a little more, they kind of picked up the pace. We’ve got two weeks to get ready for Baytown Sterling and that’s what we’re looking towards.”

Whittington felt the scrimmage went a long way in taking the awe out of the experience of playing varsity ball for the newcomers.

Whittington thought the tackling could have been crisper, but he credited some of that to again being forced inside too much this past week.

The offensive line, felt the second-year head coach, needed to do a better job of driving off the line of scrimmage and getting in the mindset to win the war in the trenches.

But as far as his returners were concerned, Whittington said the likes of Chris Loveless and Jessie Raglin played as expected. After all, Saturday was just the start of what Whittington hopes will be a rewarding season for his seasoned guys.
