Young boy drowns in family pond

EAST COUNTY – A young boy died from an apparent drowning Tuesday night after local law enforcement found the 2 1/2-year-old in a pond located in his parent’s backyard.

Craig Lawson, with the Pct. 4 Constable’s Office, confirmed the child’s body was recovered at approximately 10 p.m. after divers with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and The Woodlands Fire Department conducted a search of the 1-acre pond. The pond is believed to have a maximum depth of 18 feet, Lawson said.

The child was first noticed missing at approximately 6 p.m. as he was swimming in the pond with two other children, ages 7 and 9, Lawson said.

According to Lawson, the young child’s father and grandfather were in the backyard trimming limbs off trees as the three children swam in the pond.

It was at that point the two adults noticed the child was missing and that his life jacket was next to the house, some 60 feet from the pond, Lawson said.

The house is located at 19274 South Rayburn, west of FM 1485.

Roger Y. Hoots, pastor of the East River Baptist Church and identified as pastor of the child’s family, said the parents called 9-1-1 15 minutes after the child went missing.

Law enforcement also searched other parts of the property in an effort to locate the child.

The boy’s death marks the 10th drowning in Montgomery County for 2008.
