La Porte police seize money, gambling machines

Updated: 08.01.08
On Tuesday, July 29, detectives with the La Porte Police Department executed a search warrant on “Fun Land” located at 10339 W. Fairmont Parkway in La Porte.

Fun Land is a casino-type business where patrons go to play “8 liner machines.” Fun Land was formally Rosita’s, which was located in the 8200 block of Spencer Highway. That location was inspected by the La Porte Police Department and the La Porte Fire Marshall’s Office in August of 2007. The Fire Marshall found several fire code violations and detectives discovered that the establishment was an illegal gambling operation.

Patrons and the establishment were cited for various offenses at that time.

In the latest seizure, detectives seized $7,821 in cash and 46 gaming machines, valued in excess of $160,000, from the Fun Land location. Detectives also recovered a small amount of illegal drugs.

Several patrons in the establishment were warned that their activity constituted a criminal offense punishable by up to a $500 fine.

The La Porte Police Department is committed to enforcing the gambling laws of the state of Texas and will issue citations to citizens suspected of engaging in gambling in these establishments.

Arrest warrants will be obtained at a later date for “keeping a gambling place” and “gambling promotion.” Detectives are also researching the possibility of filing other state or federal charges of persons involved.

Lead investigators in this case are detectives Kelly Green and Danny Jones.
