Businesses and county office closures, along with some light rain, were the only sign of Tropical Storm Edouard as of 4:30 p.m. today in The Woodlands.

All community pools were closed for the day, and pool programs were cancelled through Wednesday. Other programs, including camps, at The Woodlands Recreation Center, were also cancelled. Lone Star College – Montgomery on Texas 242 cancelled all classes.

All Montgomery County Offices, except for those of public safety employees and other essential personnel, were closed for the day.

After making a rush to businesses for food and emergency supplies yesterday, many South County residents seemed to be staying at home as Edouard moved in. In addition to the closures, traffic was light on the streets.

Rick Laws, a Houston resident in The Woodlands for business, fueled up at the Shell Station at the intersection of Interstate 45 and Lake Front Circle today, instead of yesterday as officials had urged as a precaution in advance of the storm..

“I’m not worried about this storm,” Laws said.

“I waited until today (to fuel up) because everybody was out last night. (I knew) it’s not going to be that bad,” he said.

However, meteorologists predict flooding and isolated tornadoes are a possibility.

“Mobile homes in the path of the strongest winds may experience light to moderate damage,” the National Weather Service said in a statement issued in connection with a wind warning. “Houses of poor construction may have minor to moderate damage to shingles, siding, gutters and windows.

“Unfastened outdoor items of light to moderate weight will become airborne, causing additional damage and possible injury.”

The Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management had been activated in advance of the storm. The county activated several cooling stations/shelters, in Conroe, New Caney and Splendora.

Information on Montgomery County’s storm preparations and other news can be found at www.mctxoem.org.

In addition the Montgomery County United Way coordinated with governmental agencies and other non-profit organizations, prepared to help people affected by the storm.

Residents needing assistance can get more infomation online at www.mc-cares.org. The United Way’s helpline is 888-844-6289 x235 in The Woodlands area.
