Birdsey in hunt at U.S. Junior tourney

Thomas Birdsey, of The Woodlands, is in position to qualify for the match play portion of 61st U.S. Junior Amateur Championship.

Birdsey, a junior at College Park, was 6-over-par through nine holes of the second round of qualifying Tuesday at the Shoal Creek golf course in Birmingham, Ala., when severe weather suspended play.

Birdsey, who shot a 76 during the first round Monday, was among half the field that was still on the course when play was halted Tuesday.

Birdsey is currently tied for 51st place when play resumes at 8 a.m. today. The field will be trimmed to the lowest 64 scorers and first round matches are scheduled to begin today.


Jordge Fernandez Valdes, 15, of Argentina, shot a seven-under 65 Monday and was eight-under tournament with a five-shot lead after playing eight holes on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Kevin Foley, of The Woodlands, is among eight golfers tied for second place after the first round of the American Junior Golf Association’s Junior All-Star held at The Rawls Course at Texas Tech University.

Foley shot a 2-under-par 70 on the 6,817-yard course in Lubbock. He’s five shots behind Taylor Moore, of Edmond, Okla., who carded a 65.
